It seems like a sort of idée fixe that means something, just like that twinkly bit that plays in the sad introspective theme.

Sort of like a black starry sky reflecting off an ocean of sadness. I dunno haha, it seems like it signifies something

It's a track by RJD2 called A Beautiful Mine. It wasn't written for the show, so I don't think it really specifically represents anything about the show. I'm sure you could draw conclusions about what it could represent, but there's no real correct answer to this question.

It represents Don Draper’s deep unhappiness with himself, that he’ll never be good enough.

What do you think Donald Draper truly needs? Is it even possible for him or people like him to find some solace?

Don is an addict. No matter how much money, women or success he gets, it will never be enough. He'll chase that next high to the end of the earth.

Don't you think the external conditions of his life need to be overhauled as well? Wasn't he much happier when he was carefree hanging with those rich hippies and just shooting the shit?

I feel like the obsession with building and maintaining the perfect nuclear family is sort of a big part of his problem. He's trying to shoehorn and be shoehorned into a life that really isnt his where he's unable to truly be authentic or slow down long enough to get some of that introspection. Ditto for his job. You become like the people you spend the most time with. His work seems like a huge chronic trigger also.

Isn’t that the deep irony of the show though?

Don tells everyone what they want but he can’t figure it out for himself?

Ad man: buy thyself

Don doesn't love himself or believe anyone else could love him. That's understandable since he grew up being told very clearly that was unwanted. He keeps trying to fill this massive void in his life with professional success, drinking, and philandering but it all just leaves him feeling empty.

Don needs some serious therapy, which would have been incredibly difficult to come by in the 1960's.
