I'm so old that I still remember when working in the fields picking fruit was a thing that local teenagers would occasionally do. And I'm not really that old, it was the 1980s. It's been quite a rapid change.

Same. I grew up detassling corn, potato harvesting, and apple picking through high-school. A decade later lived in a house surrounded by greenhouses with a farm owned garage converted to house that was always full of 8-12 Mexican temps. Good people, great food but only knew them for a couple months and never would see them again.

Considering this, I can understand why the 'lazy teens' meme came about. We take for granted that getting temp farm work should be effortless and mistakenly assume the only reason they aren't working is because they can't be bothered to sweat a little. I at least am guilty of this more than I'd like.

Lazy teens don't want to spend 40+ hours in the field then walk uphill both ways to school.

It's so funny to me how transparent these capitalists are. "We can't find any employees!" That's strange because all of their competitors who increased wages have employees and there are 1.4 million Canadians looking for work. Damn lazy entitled business owners and the politicians that enable them.

I don’t have a problem bringing in foreign workers if there’s a need for the skills or talent, but the minimum wage for those workers needs to be at least 70% more than Canadians citizens.

If a company has no alternative they’ll bring them over but otherwise they’ll give jobs to Canadians first.

Add on a path to citizenship + protections, tfw program has a history of abuse, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-temporary-foreign-workers-open-permit-part-one-1.6534796 https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/temporary-foreign-workers-vulnerability-noted-in-sexual-harassment-case-1.3089970 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/headlines/who-s-looking-out-for-tim-hortons-temporary-foreign-workers-1.1282019

These go back to 2012 and these are just some cherry picked headlines, entire program needs to be dismantled, or at least fundamentally changed. We've known about these issues for years, there's no excuse.

This is a rare case where an article title phrased as a question is answered with "yes."

Not even young people. My company is setting up and firing their older staff to replace with TFW because cheaper... while simultaneously holding meetings about deteriorating deliverables quality...
