Another FSD killing.

This type of crash also underlines the need for motorcycle filtering (motorcycles can move around stopped vehicles to the front of the line at a stop light) to be legalized country-wide. The more assisted driving technologies are becoming standard in vehicles, the more opportunities for distracted driving and this type of crash involving motorcycles.

I never thought of the safety aspect, but it makes sense that being up front for motorcyclists is safer than staying in the back where they can be rear ended.

Most of the arguments I've seen for filtering was mostly about just "free traffic improvements", as you're simply moving more people through the same streets as before without any real penalty.

Filtering isnt legal in my area, but I still do it for this exact reason. Have yet to be pulled over. But even if I am, I'll take the ticket over being rear ended.

Australia proved with data that filtering is SO much safer, but the US refuses to do anything at all to make roads safer for anyone.

As a motorcyclist who commutes in this very area daily, this shit really sucks to read. My condolences to the young man on his way along the infinite expanse.

I hate the idea of cameras watching where your eyes are, but sheesh, this is ridiculous. It might be necessary.

For the record, I tested my partner's Toyota adaptive cruise control, it reliably sensed a motorcycle ahead of me in the rain. Know why it reliably worked even in semi-fog? It has fucking radar, Elon dunce.

Autopilot will often detect a MC, and then the drive planner doesn't do anything about it. The software is total garbage.

Bad bot: “Autopilot”. FSD is very different from autopilot and we need to stop conflating them. The article clearly specified autopilot.

Of course in this case there is no real difference except to call the driver an even bigger idiot. Either one should keep you from running over the rider in front of you.

When I tried autopilot it worked very well - as long as you think of it as a smarter cruise control. The driver is very much in control, very much has to pay attention, and autopilot is generally following traffic while not running over anything. In my case I was even able to use it highway to local street because it slowed for traffic, even to a stop. But autopilot doesn’t navigate, turn or make choices: it’s up to the driver and you clearly need to pay constant attention

"... as long as you think about it as a smarter cruise control."

... which is EXACTLY why the FTC should've stepped in and forced dipshit Musk to rename it. "autopilot" DOES NOT mean "enhanced cruise control" to normal people.

If you use that kind of reasoning, then any thing goes, doesn't it?

When I tried out -something- it worked well, as long as you think of it as -something else-

[-] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

No. Autopilot is a smarter cruise control. No more and no less.

This is why I think it’s important to distinguish autopilot from “full self driving”. They are very different features with very different claims, yet people seem to use them interchangeably.

the driver told a trooper that he was using Tesla’s Autopilot system and looked at his cellphone while the Tesla was moving

We're entering the period where autonomous vehicles are good, but not quite good enough to completely remove the human from the loop yet. It's important to treat these systems as what they're capable of, rather than what people might think they are capable of.

Tesla’s Autopilot system killed the motorcyclist then?

I can't wait till we're like that show upload, and the cars all just drive themselves and communicate with each other while you bang in the back seat

No real surprise here, autopilot has been crashing into motorcycles for many years at this point with absolutely no repercussions for Tesla.
