The trick is to use it as an adjective every time instead of as a noun. Nounification makes shit weird.

Legitimately, how else would you say this? "Woman characters" clearly sounds wrong, "characters who are women" sounds unnecessarily long and clunky.
I'd just say "women". characters is redundant when you specify it's in a game.
