This doesn't make sense at all, it's just dumb. The "taste" has nothing to do with the reason to eat them, and something tasteless isn't hard to eat. Why not say they taste vile or anything else like that? The whole thing clearly wasn't thought about for even a second, yet somehow people are dumb enough to photograph it and share it online.
Because "tasteless" also has the alternative definition, meaning "gaudy", "tacky", or "pretentious". So, I think they did indeed think about it, perhaps even longer than you did before getting all worked up over it.
