Effectiveness of this suggestion hinges on Rs having shame and/or decency. It's almost prerequisite to not have such a thing to get voted in.

Republicans only represent 1/3 of the public. If 2/3rds of the public is laughing at them, that's more than good enough.

Turning your opponent into a joke is one of the best methods of attack, especially in cases where the threat is very serious. War propaganda the world over characterizes a nation's enemy as some bumbling idiot. Hogan's Heroes, the TV show, did a great job at portraying the very serious issue of Nazis and made them look like a joke. Democrats are so bad at marketing and going after their opponents though that they'll never do anything.
