I've heard it can go pretty insane and overrun areas. Plus it rhizomes so it is hard to eradicate. I planted some sea buckthorn here (not the Midwest) a couple years ago and it is still small, but I'm keeping an eye on it. I like the berries. They taste strong, like you're eating a vitamin.

I'm only familiar with sea buckthorn and it's bright golden orange berries. I know they are safe to eat. Idk about the purple ones.
