In the game, Russia is responsible for the Venezuela coup, and are currently invading the "Middle East" like Israel.

North Korea mindlessly slaughters their people

It's honestly fucking hilarious

I think COD4 definitely takes the least worst award. It seems self-aware that almost all events in the campaign are self-inflicted and the US/UK forces could just back off at any point and nothing else would happen. Imran Zakhaev (hey what if our bad guy was both Russian AND Muslim?) was a much better villain than le epic joker Makarov too. Also your Russian allies are wearing Soviet insignia.

But yeah this shit is still bad. Even if there is a deliberate theme of the folly of endless western escalation all the g@mers are not going to be picking up on it.

I genuinely think least worse goes to Black Ops Cold War on the technicality that you can be an 80s enby that ends up shooting your various western intelligence teammates who brainwashed you in the head and then win the cold war for the USSR by detonating stay-behind nukes all over europe

Ronald Reagan respecting your pronouns sure is a choice for a Call of Duty game to make lmao

Least-worst is still a low bar, I don't really think cod4 is that self aware. It's nominally anti-war in a way that fits DoD narratives and shit: 'The REAL HEROES are the HARD SAS BLOKES doing DIRTY WORK BEHIND THE SCENES who NEVER GET ANY CREDIT', underscored by the news headline that's read after you kill Zakhaev. Anti-War-Pro-Soldier, so like First Blood but without any officers down. Plus the russian ultranationalists are depicted as complete bastards even though what Zakhaev says in the intro is pretty much true about the post-Soviet USSR.
