Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

On this day in 1838, the first major group of Cherokee, more than 12,000 people, were forced out of Tennessee, traveling westward from the town of Red Clay. A Choctaw leader called the forced deportations "a trail of tears and death".

The Trail of Tears was the cumulative result of a series of forced relocations of approximately 60,000-100,000 Native Americans in the United States from their ancestral homelands in the southeast to areas west of the Mississippi River that had been designated as "Indian Territory".

In 1837-38, President Martin Van Buren allowed Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama, using an armed force of 7,000 people, to relocate about 13,000 Cherokees to Cleveland, Tennessee. On October 1st, 1838, the first major group of Cherokee, more than 12,000 people in hundreds of covered wagons, were forced out of Tennessee, traveling westward from the town of Red Clay.

Taking the journey through an unusually cold winter, they suffered terribly from exposure, disease, and starvation, killing several thousand people while en route to their new designated reserve. They were also attacked by locals and economically exploited - starving Indians were charged a dollar a head, equal to $24.01 today, to cross the Ohio River, which typically charged twelve cents, equal to $2.88 today.

I hope you nerds have a good month of October cuddle

I think mods aren't vetted enough. It's fine if it's one of the hobby/art/music/animal comms to just be like "Are you a socialist?" and they get to be a mod if they answer "Yes." The problems arise in the more serious comms where people discuss theory, news, etc. For mods in those places, there should be a written test asking what they'd do in hypothetical struggle sessions. Just going off the top of my head something like:

Two users are arguing in the slop comm. One of them had to flee their home country due to persecution. The other still lives in said country, but is angry the first user is badmouthing their homeland as it's being targeted by American propaganda. Other users are now taking sides and piling onto both users. How would you go about moderating this?

Mod applicants should be able to clearly (in their own words) communicate how they would approach this, especially as they aren't from the country in question. The country itself can be entirely fictional (Atlantis, for example), so there's no way for the applicant to know anything about it except the above exchange (same for the people arguing in the sidelines). There's of course a correct way to handle the situation and how much leniency is given can depend on the rest of their application/answer. Queue ten or more such hypotheticals, covering a variety of topics (not just EMPoC issues), ranging from local politics to fandom infighting to sexism and so on.

Another set of questions can be about actual theory. The applicant lists what they've read and get questions in response. There can be required reading from a given set of books (example, the applicant has to have read two (three? four?) or more of the following concerning black history: the Autobiography of Malcolm X, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Revolutionary Suicide, Wretched of the Earth, Settlers, Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880, Invisible Man, and more than I can list in a single comment). Some socialist texts would be the bare minimum (like at least read the Communist Manifesto).

All of this is probably asking too much, though. Which means it won't be implemented. Which means nothing will change.

Thank you for the response. Yes this sounds like it would be a good way to vet mods and I share your pessimism that it would be implemented :(
