Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

On this day in 1838, the first major group of Cherokee, more than 12,000 people, were forced out of Tennessee, traveling westward from the town of Red Clay. A Choctaw leader called the forced deportations "a trail of tears and death".

The Trail of Tears was the cumulative result of a series of forced relocations of approximately 60,000-100,000 Native Americans in the United States from their ancestral homelands in the southeast to areas west of the Mississippi River that had been designated as "Indian Territory".

In 1837-38, President Martin Van Buren allowed Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama, using an armed force of 7,000 people, to relocate about 13,000 Cherokees to Cleveland, Tennessee. On October 1st, 1838, the first major group of Cherokee, more than 12,000 people in hundreds of covered wagons, were forced out of Tennessee, traveling westward from the town of Red Clay.

Taking the journey through an unusually cold winter, they suffered terribly from exposure, disease, and starvation, killing several thousand people while en route to their new designated reserve. They were also attacked by locals and economically exploited - starving Indians were charged a dollar a head, equal to $24.01 today, to cross the Ohio River, which typically charged twelve cents, equal to $2.88 today.

I hope you nerds have a good month of October cuddle

First, I want to publicly mourn that we have lost 3 or 4 racialized comrades last month from this site: AlHouthi4President, FrivolousBeatnik, honhon9000, ~~(and the last name escapes me right now, my sincere apologies)~~ and Vegeta.  We’ve been steadily having people leave because they keep having interactions that show them this site’s latent prioritization of white feelings over bipoc lives, and it gets to be too much.  I also want to offer tentacular hugs to all who are here and those who have left as well.

With that said, I want those problems to be improved.  I am aware this is not likely to happen.  However, I’m cursed with an inability to give up without great difficulty.

As a followup to the struggle session I got embroiled in last week regarding white woman feminism and essentialist generalizations that also end up harming racialized men, women, and trans women (https://hexbear.net/post/9574973/7468179), there may be an opportunity to push for growth, education, and ideological refinement in the hexbear space that I am interested in taking.

Here’s the current status:

1. A Line to the Admin

collapsible text of point 1

Carcosa DM'd me and I’d like to address and discuss what they said with people here:

I personally disagree with how the moderation was handled but the internal systems set up discourage admin overreach on community moderation actions without an appeal, plus I didn't handle it perfectly anyway so there's nonzero standing to remove it -- just not enough standing that I think it should have been.

I have considered appealing the removal of my comment but haven’t been able to commit to it.  It’s still in the mod log and getting a 10 day old comment restored doesn’t feel worth the effort to me.

I sincerely agree with the problems with the site moderation discussed in the em_poc thread however do not know what a good pathway forward for action is. As it is not as simple as recruiting more em_poc members into the mod or admin team and the community code of conduct rewrite has not been enough.

What do y’all think?  The common refrain has been that the mod team needs to confront its white brainworms and latent liberal zionism, maybe be more third-worldist.  If we have admin backing, my proposal is re-education.  Literally, writing things up, handing them to the admin, and getting Carcosa to leverage their position to ram through policy changes and make people either learn and grow or resign.

I am not asking you to take on any extra efforts only asking for you or anyone else you've included in your discussion to consider communicating with me privately. Any discussion that would take place would have 1000% mod action immunity for anyone in the em_poc community.  I am sure there is ample doubt of my or any admin ability to actually do this as the history of the site speaks otherwise nor can I blame anyone but myself and the other admins.

As of now, Carcosa’s sent out an open invitation for any of us to DM them their concerns.  While I think their offer is in good faith, I worry that only DMing them in order to minimize hostile backlash from other users would lead to a lack of transparency, whereas unified or joint anonymized public statements (if we can agree on a joint position, a “poc party line”,) are harder to ignore and give the userbase something to reference in future disputes.  I said about as much in my response:

(Me:) What I think I would like is if we in the empoc comm can organize some sort of writeup as remedial education that fills in the gaps (blind spots) in white feminist analysis and then the admin or mod team can take that up and try to help start incorporating it into the site culture.  Because this is bigger than Hexbear itself, but Hexbear has taken a leading role in educating people through site culture on other matters.  However, some of that pessimism comes from people feeling that the mod team is not interested in that growth based on a long history of disappointing interactions with the mod team.  I can ask around and see if people would rather DM you or DM me and have me write up a synthesized party line.

(Still Me:) I think education is necessary.  I think I'm interested in trying to write up and synthesize, if people do not want to DM you directly, something that can be used to facilitate that education.  I fear that making it completely transparent (an effortpost) could ignite another struggle session, and I fear that making it not transparent enough could result in no accountability and no progress.

Carcosa’s response, emphasis added

Thank you for the response, I will commit to temp or perm sitebanning anyone pushing back against such an educational post, if you want I can approve an account that the em_poc community can use collectively or to make the post.  I have wondered about how a mod/admin audit could work. An idea that could be a way to improve trust.  I would like to say most of the people involved with some of the worst decisions and actions are no longer with the site moderation team but without more specifics I don't want to say for sure.

I personally have paid less attention to the mod-team issue, so it would fall on others to do the writeup for that, however I may be able to facilitate said writeup if people send me receipts.  I think that Liberal Zionism, often visibly as prioritizing zionist feelings over the lives of their victims, has been the most visible problem we keep running into, but there have also been anti-black struggles.  Any compilations of grievances and examples of which we can bring to Carcosa’s attention may be helpful in setting forth clearer expectations for moderator behavior.

2.  What now?

collapsible text of point 2

Now I want to try to tackle the deeper issues here.  The site issues are not Hexbear problems, they are western society problems that infect Hexbear.  Any space that exists within a racist society will still have problems of racism if it does not work hard to combat those problems within it.  We can shrink away from this site into smaller and smaller enclaves and privater and privater groups, or we can try to turn this space into one that can help re-educate people out of those perspectives.  I know people are burnt out and do not have much hope that Hexbear’s latent whiteness problem can be solved, given that we’ve had multiple zionist struggle sessions during an ongoing live-streamed Nakba 2.0.  I am not calling on anyone to take on a fight that they’re not up for.  However, I believe in taking every opportunity to force growth and education — even if by dragging the site kicking and screaming — because otherwise it’ll never get better.  Maybe a misapplication of Sankara’s “as revolutionaries, we don't have the right to say that we are tired of explaining”, but the line captures my compulsion.  I’ve certainly had my perspectives on other matters updated through education on this site.  I think it’s worth some effort, and I’m up for being the tip of the spear if other people don’t want to be at the front.  All I need is for people to back me up — if you don’t want to DM Carcosa or respond to comments here which can be publicly seen, DM me instead.  Maybe we make a Hexbear empoc matrix that’s invitation-only and workshop a joint statement.

I’m trying to work on a general effort post about the problems with white (imperialist and colonialist) feminism but it’s going to take me quite some time as I want to make it high quality and difficult to attack.  I got curious and picked up some books to read to learn more about actually, because I have a feeling that what racialized people know already through lived experience will have to be verbalized very clearly and intellectualized for white people to digest.  I’d certainly want community review before posting it publicly, if anyone’s up for it, and I don’t know what my timeline is because I have a lot going on offline that takes precedence too.

I welcome any input people want to send here or in DMs.

P.S. a note on the user I was arguing with in the initial struggle session:

She messaged me from her new account and took accountability very convincingly.  She also said she could DM the mods and vouch for me.  She expressed a willingness to self-crit while also having the self-awareness to not center a white voice.  I advised I think self crit isn't earned yet and I'd rather that we POC be empowered to take the lead here rather than relying on a white person to come save us by talking to the other white people.  She took it well and said to let her know if she could help, but she wasn’t going to insert herself into it.

I was very pleasantly surprised!  I feel she comported herself honorably in our private discussion, and I consider my beef with her personally settled.  Further discussions about some of widespread yet toxic ideas which she happened to uncover are simply ideological refinement, nothing personal.  I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to single her out for that and I do not intend to bring her up by name regarding any of this struggle session henceforth.  Other elements of how she interacts with people on the site are outside the scope of what I care about, which are the racial and biological essentialist problems so much of the most popular kind of feminism (white feminism) reifies.  She’s expressed a desire to improve how heated she gets in arguments and I wish her good luck in that, but that is so very much not my focus.

And that’s all I have to say about her.

I think mods aren't vetted enough. It's fine if it's one of the hobby/art/music/animal comms to just be like "Are you a socialist?" and they get to be a mod if they answer "Yes." The problems arise in the more serious comms where people discuss theory, news, etc. For mods in those places, there should be a written test asking what they'd do in hypothetical struggle sessions. Just going off the top of my head something like:

Two users are arguing in the slop comm. One of them had to flee their home country due to persecution. The other still lives in said country, but is angry the first user is badmouthing their homeland as it's being targeted by American propaganda. Other users are now taking sides and piling onto both users. How would you go about moderating this?

Mod applicants should be able to clearly (in their own words) communicate how they would approach this, especially as they aren't from the country in question. The country itself can be entirely fictional (Atlantis, for example), so there's no way for the applicant to know anything about it except the above exchange (same for the people arguing in the sidelines). There's of course a correct way to handle the situation and how much leniency is given can depend on the rest of their application/answer. Queue ten or more such hypotheticals, covering a variety of topics (not just EMPoC issues), ranging from local politics to fandom infighting to sexism and so on.

Another set of questions can be about actual theory. The applicant lists what they've read and get questions in response. There can be required reading from a given set of books (example, the applicant has to have read two (three? four?) or more of the following concerning black history: the Autobiography of Malcolm X, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Revolutionary Suicide, Wretched of the Earth, Settlers, Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880, Invisible Man, and more than I can list in a single comment). Some socialist texts would be the bare minimum (like at least read the Communist Manifesto).

All of this is probably asking too much, though. Which means it won't be implemented. Which means nothing will change.

Thank you for the response. Yes this sounds like it would be a good way to vet mods and I share your pessimism that it would be implemented :(

@ me when the post is made comrade

haha at this point if, as I dig into it more I feel more daunted but I said I woudl try so I'm not giving up yet

[–] T34_69@hexbear.net 16 points 5 days ago (2 children)

This site is unreformable for structural reasons imo, it's best treated like a fidget toy and a hub for news, links, and donations. It'll continue to get less and less interesting, more monochrome over time as the more interesting users get pushed out for their challenging outlooks and opinions. I do miss those users though.

I have been pained watching it get less interesting and more monochrome, yes! god damn at this point even if improvements somehow do get rammed through from on high, what will we be left with? I don't think those people are ever coming back

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I feel the same. Especially considering the mod team treat it like some cliquey insider club and are still friends with zionists, racists and whites who tell poc to kill themselves, it's not a hopeful look. Besides nuking the whole mod team and giving users who proved their worth the reigns I don't see any improvements ever being made. And we know they won't do that, power hungry crackers.

The white mod who tells poc to sewerslide yet being clandestinely welcomed back sounds so incredibly egregious, and I've lost track of how many times people have brought that up. gotta admit I went into this with fire and zeal because I thought I had admin backing, but how much admin backing can I possibly have if things have been allowed to get to this state already? If we have to ask for that sort of thing to be taken seriously, the field is already lost.

[–] puppygirlpets@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

ngl i have absolutely no confidence in this admin team to do anything. they have treated overt anti-black racism with a 24hr ban and a post removal with the chud anarkkkist responsible allowed to carry on like nothing happened

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 11 points 5 days ago

To be clear, referring to this removed comment? https://hexbear.net/comment/7504210

[–] WhiteDNI@hexbear.net 20 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

Rip to vegeta, there's also no transparency on what mod did what and it's cliquey as fuck, we all know nako got a free pass to tell pocs to kill themselves until we made enough of a sting about it that she was removed.

So mod abuse is encouraged or it feels like it.

I've been thinking about maybe posting news and memes in this comm so it can be a safe space for pocs and the no crackers rules would still apply but I don't know how others feel about it

Also I'm sorry if I upset you, it wasn't my intention

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 5 points 21 hours ago

I think that's a great idea, and you didn't upset me! The rampant and maybe intractable problems you pointed out did, but I asked for those to be highlighted

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

And shes back and since the mods admitted they still were friends and talked to her after her banning (which I wouldnt do but isnt necessary wrong), I fully believe they know shes back if they didn't outright tell her to ban evade

The mods also see who reports each post and if they dont like you they just ignore it, or in that user's care they ignore if someone they like gets reported.

And if they really dont like your report they DM you to lecture you :)

If you want to DM me more details about any of this I'd appreciate, but you are under no obligation to. Thanks for even entertaining this discussion
