What is global news?

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn't have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title formatPost title should mirror the news source title. If you don't like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.
URL formatPost URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.
[Opinion] prefixOpinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.
Country prefixCountry prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn't clearly mention the country.

Washington (United States) (AFP) – Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday that the United States has slashed the number of its generals and admirals by 20 percent, in a move he said is aimed at "accountability."

Hegseth suggested the cuts targeted officers who failed to get on board with his efforts to ensure the military is focused on war-fighting rather than the "woke" policies of previous administrations, describing the reductions as an "accomplishment."

"The number-crunchers say we fired 10 percent of the generals and admirals across the force," Hegseth told troops at the Quantico military base, saying: "We've also reduced the overall number of general officer slots by an additional 10 percent."

"So yes, 20 percent reduction across the board," he said. "The media calls that a purge. I call it accountability, and long overdue."

The address to junior officers and enlisted personnel at Quantico came a year after a similar speech to top officers in which Hegseth said the US military was too fat, too focused on leftist "woke" ideas, and in need of major shake-up.

He said Wednesday that top officers who "responded positively" to the previous speech are "leading newly focused and newly empowered and disciplined formations," while those who did not "no longer work here."

"We are no longer the woke department, or the weak department," Hegseth said.

"Simple translation of that: no fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals. Just warriors -- just tough, ready, committed troops."

Uh... No? 10% of category A and 10% of category B is still 10% of both categories together.

eyup. he does say they reduced the slots an additional 10% but that would be just getting rid of the slots he just vacated.

To make things more confusing, he's not talking about the O-10 ranks of General and Admiral specifically but the category of general and flag officers (GFOs) which are pay grades O-7 through O-10. Navy calls them Rear Admiral (Lower Half), Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, and Admiral while everybody else calls them Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, and General. The reductions are being applied to the larger category of all services' highest-ranking officers. Fired 10%, reduced available positions by another 10% across the GFO ranks.

Not necessarily, if one group is larger than the other it would be either more or less.

10 out of 100 generals and 1 out of 10 admirals would be 5.5% across the board, despite both being 10% individually.

10+1 = 11

100+10 = 110

11/110 = 0.1

0.1*100 = 10%
