The witness is Jack Smith, who used to be the federal prosecutor in charge of prosecuting Donald Trump.

The Atlanta Hawks are a professional NBA mens basketball team that play their home games in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Senator was trying to prove that Jack Smith secretly had a meeting with Fani Willis in Atlanta, who was a Georgia state's attorney in charge of prosecuting Donald Trump on a different case. The Senator found a reference to the "Hawks" in Jack Smith's text messages. He felt that this alone proved that Smith had met Willis.

There was just one little problem. The text message was actually about the Iowa Hawkeyes, a college womens basketball team. Jack Smith had actually attended a Hawkeyes game against U of Maryland in Maryland. At that game he saw Caitlin Clark score 38 points and 12 assists.

Jack Smith testified he is a fan of Caitlin Clark, and he never visited Atlanta in the 2024 time frame, unless he was just passing through the airport.

The Senator asked Smith if he went to a Hawks game. Smith said he didn’t. Schmidt accused Smith of perjury claiming he had evidence. It turned out the evidence was that Smith went to a Hawkeye’s game in a completely different state.

Senator confused the hawks/hawkeyes teams, thought he had a “gotcha”, did not, and did not want to accept he was mistaken.
