School is a place to store children so adults can work. It just so happens to also be a decent place to learn. Remember the order of priorities
School also is a way to force children to get used to factory schedules from industrialism
Schools are also a place to expose kids to topics and resources their households may not be able to afford to show them. Schools provide a large range to topics for which students can discover their interest/strengths. They provide initial structure to build to those dreams.
Without schools, most kids would just be learning to do whatever their parents do. That would be the only education they'd have.
Schools also give you the opportunity to learn how to interact with your peers
What factories run from 9am to 3pm ?
More like schools developed strict schedules during industrialization and it was more society adapting even children to all being at the right room at the same time, all taking lunch at the same time, obeying a strict hierarchy without question, not leaving until the exact allowed time.
Oh, gee... at the time parents started working at specific times schools started scheduling at specific times.

My kids are presently "stored" at day care so I can work. It's a great environment for them, playing with their peers and learning things. What's so terrible about that?
They could be working.

I mean, it is. But that's a uselessly broad, unfocused statement, like "coffee beans are killing giraffes." A system perpetuates itself or it fails. Schools both yield new workers and temporarily free them of obligations so that they can work.
