- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I know someone at work who is often "a-political" and tries the whole let's hear out all sides. This is am excellent reason as to why you just need to pick a side, because now he's probably alienating people on both sides.
That said, there will always be Ed Sheeran fans, just like some people still like Harry Potter. I'll never understand why.
My issue with apoliticism is that, IMO, it's impossible: it just endorses the status quo, and is simply a fachade to hide that.
Paraphrasing Desmond Tutu: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor".
And it's fine if you want to conform to the status quo, not every single discussion we have every single day should be this huge decision-making take-a-stand and die-on-that hill and so on, but just be transperent and honest about it, instead of hiding in that "apolitical" image.
"Apolitical" people don't even realize that's what they're doing. But I guarantee if something affected them they would suddenly realize why politics is important.

apolitical really means, a right winger that knows thier position is very offensive to friends and family, coworkers and is likely wrong, "so i have to pretend i cant talk about it, and in a "neutral" position so it doesnt compromise my beliefs."
I tend to be this guy when I am mostly unfamiliar with an issue, largely because I want to know the whole situation, and more importantly, the reasoning behind each side's arguments before I publicly take a position one way or the other.
In this case though, it's pretty obvious to see who the oppressor is.
It's perfectly reasonable to have an opinion on a topic based on the information you've had access to so far, while also being open to or seeking out new information that might change your mind.

you know hes likely a right winger, when he says hes not "political", why do republicans have to pretend they dont like politics.
Because the alternative is admitting to friends and family that they actually wanted all this, and that mask-off villainy may complicate some relationships.
