"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Not caring about real art and then telling us all to stop caring makes YOU look silly.
Art is a fundamental part of humanity, it's society, its expression, culture, etc. Art informs, entertains, educates, brings people together, and helps us navigate our world.
This is one of the dumbest fucking things I've ever read on the internet but I'll give you credit, if you don't think about it at all, you sound awfully smart.
No they are right. I’m a pro independent artist. I make my money selling the ingredients to my creations. People don’t really buy the end result. Regular people don’t care about art. It’s true.
Not sure whos down voting. They must be more optimistic than me. No one has ever cared about art in the grand scheme. People watch and listen to what they are fed. A few select autistic people care deeply about music/image creation and preserving the humanity behind it. Maybe .00000001% of humans.
In the end, nobody cares, "art" never was and never will be viable to live off in a capitalistic society. Like they said above, you care about my band that makes kind of OK music? Youre gonna buy my record to support me? Doesn't happen. No one gives a shit.
Just because AI exists doesn't mean people will stop painting or making music. That doesn't make any sense. And nobody is going to care any more, or any less, about that then they do today
AI's value is not in it's ability to make art, it's in it's ability to do work. Actual work. Businesses are not firing their employees at record rates to replace them with cutting edge, "cat image making" technology
Ok, you're literally on the internet right now. Go look at exactly how "replacing workers" has worked out for the vast majority of these companies.
I'll be here when you get back.
There is zero evidence of replacement, and plenty of rehiring and executive tails between legs.
You've been sold a lie again, and you bought it hook, line, and sinker.
That's it. Gen AI is interesting, but the hype is horseshit and robots cannot create art.
Stop telling people to stop caring, caring is cool.
I didn't say it was a good thing. In fact it's what you should be concerned about.
We don't care TikTok has too many AI videos of dancing cats, we're worried CEOs are trying to replace us with robots. We're worried about it's environmental impact. We're worried about it's impact on the workforce. We're worried about how much power it can get or how it'll evolve over the years. We're worried about the harm it can cause when bad people get their hands on it, etc..
crying that AI can make pictures is so far off the mark on why you should be weary of it just makes you look silly. It leads me to believe you're all children who don't know anything about business and spend way too much time watching YouTube shorts
Art is not just pictures though.
It is a driving force behind culture, empathy, society itself, and even science.
These AI companies are also lying to you about its effectiveness. That's the point I'm making. You've already bought their lies.
More than one thing can also be important, and I would argue that trying to steal art from people is vitally important and a much larger part of the fight than most understand.
Controlling art IS a path to controlling society.
Nobody is stopping you from writing poetry. You still can... and the same amount of people will continue to not care that you like, totally expressed the darkness in your soul; which is nobody
Being concerned about companies not hiring entry level employees making it difficult for college graduates to find a job because AI companies have over-estimated it's effectiveness in the business world is a legitimate complaint
Maybe make posts about that
I'm floored you cannot understand how degrading, homogenizing, and ultimately destroying an entire pillar of what makes us human is a bad thing.
People like you are why we have these issues in the first place.
Oh so you care about the garage band that I had when I was 14. Please, tell me all about it. What was your favorite song?
What's that? You've never heard of "King Klaw"? Aw man, what a sad hollow life you live
I think it would be pretty sick if a band called king klaw existed now...
I don't think this is the gotcha you think it is. I want you to succeed..
I did go on to be in a band that did get signed. Drummer died of an overdose before we got to put out an album. Had a lot of fun on the way up though.
You're missing what I said. Nobody is going to care any more or any less about the art you make than they already do. And for most of you, that means nobody is going to care at all; which is why most artists die poor
People are not going to just stop playing the guitar because AI exists. Local shows and concerts are not going to vanish because AI exists.
That's not what AI does. It's a thing AI can do, because it can do lots of things, but it's value as a technology is not in it's ability to make images or write songs, it's in it's ability to do business. Analyze data. Make reports. Manage business processes. Draft emails, take notes, schedule appointments.
Anthropic is not valued at over a billion dollars because it can generate an image of Will Smith eating Spaghetti.
There's a lot of reasons to dislike AI. It's impact on the environment, it's impact on jobs, the concern of how much control this thing can gain, issues with it going rouge, people using it for bad (like recent hacking groups using it to hack a number of health industry corporations going so far to steal identities and lock people out of medical devices), etc...
Being upset that TikTok has too many bad AI videos of cats dancing just makes you look silly. It leads me to believe you are all children
Yep youre totally right. All in all no one gives a shit about art. I can make a painting just like Jackson Pollock, splash paint out of a can whoopdy doo. Art is a human thing all humans do and so is worthless. Literally anyone can grab a guitar and write a bad song. Its not usable in a capitalistic society and never was.
Yeah ai ruined the internet but web 3.0 had already thrashed it anyways. I'm more worried about mass surveillance and burning the earth.
