Just switching from beef to chicken and pig gets you 90% of the way to vegan, emissions-wise.
It's an easy substitution to make. Make beef a treat or a once in a while thing.
It's expensive anyway.
Honestly that’s kinda how I treat beef nowadays, and I’m a relatively well-off software engineer. Not to mention, there are real and meaningful health considerations to take into account.
we had reduced it down to once in awhile due to emmissions. The wife and I. Like if we were at a burger place we might get a burger and once in awhile take advantage of a loss leader sale at the store. Since then a combination of our financial situation and beef prices and we now only eat beef when its free at a party or such.
I find I prefer pork and chicken (and turkey) anyways. Don't even need to drain them when they are ground (ok sometimes I still need to drain pork). Generally cheaper, too, though pork and beef prices do have some overlap in their fluctuations.
Probably becaise they're somewhat substitutable goods. Price for beef goes up, more people buy pork.
Yeah, economics are pretty complex. If everyone decided tomorrow to change from beef to any one alternative, that alternative would disappear from all shelves, come back way more expensive than it was, while the price of beef would trend towards zero until the low price brings people back to beef.
Yeah. Complex is the word, for sure, especially once supply chain destruction enters into it. It might take a decade to spin up beef production, but they could slaughter the herds down to nearly nothing in a year. Especially once the agreements that allow free range beef to exploit wild lands become unpopular/unmaintained.
