It has the genuine feel of early 3D Sonic. Like it's stupid as hell and seems completely unaware of its own stupidity, and that has quite a bit more charm than the "we're just cartoons, no need to take us seriously" feel of later Sonic.
A Sonic game needs a heavy mixing of sincerity and ambition like that, otherwise it's no good.
