also Queen Leanne (one of the main character's mums) is voiced by a trans woman
Queen Leanne was the kind of transfem "rep" that makes me wish we were just invisible. IIRC she's a drag queen and the plot makes it explicitly clear she's not a woman like the other women (and other trans people in the movie!) are. Vibes were off enough my girlfriend and I had to stop watching 30 minutes in.
Summoning a contested symbol that TERFs have used in the past and putting the trans colors on it, putting it in the hands of the trans woman character who exists so you can pat yourself on the back for being inclusive, is - what is the "positive representation of inclusion", here, exactly? Where does its power come from? It's trans liberalism. It's the language of somebody who wants to include a TERF symbol, is fully aware of its history, and decides to hand it to One Of The Good Ones in order to demonstrate - what? That makes it worse.
Any story about trans women that trans women don't have complete creative control from start to finish is liable to wind up being eye-wateringly transmisogynistic, and this was no exception. I'm glad a nameless trans woman got a paycheck out of it, at least.

i think you're confusing her and Blade (who is a drag queen voiced by Kween Kong). i don't remember anything iffy about Queen Leanne but it's been a while

i do agree, i thought it was okay when i first watched it but they could have very easily avoided including the sus shit if they had given it some extra thought. it just didn't feel intentional to me and this one just felt like it got a kinda unfair critical lens put on it compared to a lot of other similar media. also i've seen multiple reviews claiming that the drag queen character is the only "trans" representation in the movie when that's not the case
dw i don't think you are at all. in the end, they knowingly put something in the movie that they knew had TERFy vibes when they could have just used a sword for the sword lesbians lol
my opinion is that i'm sick of symbol discourse and I'm sick of the whole concept of like, okay, some white supremacists went 👌 or something so now 👌 is for nazis forever now, like, I think we have more important things to worry about than having a constant rolling and expanding encyclopedia of dog whistles to keep track of and also permanently edify in our culture and language as belonging to bigoted shitheads forever (so that, like The Dunk Tank, some nerd 100 or 2000 years from now will go "UM AKSHUALLY 👌 IS A WHITE SUPREMACIST SYMBOL" no matter how far removed from any of the current modern shit that led to that association it ends up being). I think it yields an incredible amount of cultural influence to bigoted shitheads because it seems incredibly easy for literally anything to be taken and used this way.
but as long as we're here worrying about symbols and other nonsense shit IMO the logic of taking the battle axe thing (whatever a labrys is, sounds french) and putting it in the hands of a trans character as a way of taking it back from TERFism totally makes sense. i'm not going to argue it isn't lib shit but like i get the logic
the problem is it sounds like they entirely fucked up her character and, in doing so, fucked it all up so bad that it honestly looks like they were doing TERF stuff on purpose (going entirely on your description of the character because my exposure to this movie is literally contained to the posts in this thread, so idk anything about her)
Yeah, you get it. If the story had been told differently it could have been a powerful moment. I really couldn't tell if it was that oblivious or just crypto-TERF shit laundered through some box-checking identity politics. The labrys was just the first thing that came to mind that was off about the movie.
I know both trans and cis lesbians who want to reclaim the labrys, and it is not universally used by terfs either as most of them aren't even lesbian to begin with, but it's definitely a red flag when i see it out in the wild and you sound as if there's more dog whistles, too.
There were enough dog whistles/general bad vibes that my girlfriend and I had to stop watching about 30 minutes in. I kept waiting for it to redeem itself somehow and it didn't. I don't know how to describe it without starting a struggle session I'd rather not deal with tbh.
Suffice to say it's the kind of barely plausibly deniable shit that gets you dogpiled for misunderstanding how inclusive it is, actually. You're just misunderstanding. You're overreacting. And so on. You know the drill. It had bad enough vibes As Two Trans Women(tm) that we both felt like we were in danger.
Oh damn. Now i honestly don't know if i should pirate this and see for myself because it wouldn't take long to confirm when it's that bad that soon or if i should just stay away from it. Part of me wants to be sure, but your description sounds like the kind of stuff that could really get under my skin.
My girlfriend clocked it within the first 90 seconds or so. I thought it might redeem itself and it just kept digging itself deeper. It's on tankietube if you have a minute and a half to spare, so long as you're ready to disengage as soon as the vibes are off.
Watching it felt like entering a "queer space" where there's one other transfem in the room and her eyes are full of an ineffable despair. I couldn't tell if it's meant to be crypto-TERF garbage or just the ambient queer transmisogyny that keeps happening in spaces when you don't center transfems. That same sense of danger.
I stopped giving media the benefit of the doubt after that. It's not worth it, especially not when someone else is getting hurt because I'm being hard-headed.
To turn this in a more - productive? - direction, if this film is an example of how not to tell a lesbian story (why are men the centerpiece of a movie about lesbians somehow? Why the tokenizing of trans women? Why the gender essentialism?), what would a good lesbian space princess movie look like? There's a story that's worth telling, and I'm glad somebody tried to tell it, but we can do better.
It is?? Not familiar with the labrys symbolism but I’d think battle axes would just be kind of a general sword lesbian thing. I looked it up on Wikipedia and I can’t find a definitive link there.
Maybe they could switch to the francesca. Throwing axes seem more complementary to sword lesbianism than battle axes.
The Lesbian flag used to have that axe on it, but tgat flag is used by terfs now
