I think competitive pvp games are not the majority of the industry. I also think that this only really seems to apply to shooters, and I think I could get even more granular by saying shooters targeted at dudes, because it doesn't really apply to the Overwatch community for example, it doesn't apply to the FGC (anymore) and it doesn't apply to Splatoon, all are pretty competitive. It applies to the dude shooters for masculine manly boys that break their controllers.

There's just something extraordinarily mediocre about modern gaming elitism. I remember when people got made fun of for playing Halo and Call of Dooty. And the thing is that it's not like COD players try to argue that COD is harder than UT or Q3A. Dota elitists are the same deal. They shit on other mobas as if Dota wasn't shit on back in the day for being played by people who sucked too hard at WC3 (which in turn was shit on for being played by people who sucked too hard at real RTS).
The elitism simultaneously shits on other games below the totem pole but pretends that games above the totem pole don't exist. In other words, it's a defense and celebration of being in the middle of the totem pole. Hence, elitism of mediocrity.
Even these games have skill based matchmaking so everyone gets a chance to win lol
