Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Wolfe and his fiancée, who witnessed the alleged assault, believe the attack was related to Wolfe being transgender, according to court documents.

how many suicides do you think the average person is involved in

do you think that if x% of people attempt suicide, that your individual chance of attempting suicide is x%

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I think the chances of someone successfully committing suicide dramatically increases if they have access to a gun.

Cool. As an adult, I like to be able to weigh positives and negatives and make my own decisions.

Since you like numbers, what are the odds these days of getting murdered by a fascist if you don't have a gun?

More like wildly increasing from what was near zero for decades.

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It is still approaching zero, unlike the very much higher risk of being killed with your own gun.

Cool. As an adult, I have lots of devices around that could horribly injure or kill me if used improperly. Are you saying I shouldn't own a table saw, ladder, or vehicle?

What if I've been prescribed medication which could kill me if I took the whole bottle? Should I not keep my medication around?

Thank goodness you're here. I guess I wasn't up to the task of managing risk and making my own decisions.

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You should weigh the costs and benefits of each. If you need help, in the United States table saws cause roughly zero deaths in the US every year, by contrast guns kill roughly 45,000 people annually.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

Considering there are something like 450,000,000 firearms in this country, and since many of those deaths are deliberately self-inflicted, those odds don't seem too bad. It ain't like a firearm will just go off on its own. Certainly reason to preach caution, but not fear. Guns demand training, mindfulness, and care. They're not for people who want to be coddled. You say it's dangerous. Of course it is! That's the point.

Nazis must not be the only group armed. Gun rights are minority rights. Every gun ban in this country has been used to oppress minorities, never to disarm fascists. You're talking to us as if you're the adult and we are children unaware of the risks. We are not. We are taking our lives and freedoms into our own hands, and preparing to defend them. You wanna use peaceful protest, go ahead. Nothing wrong with that. But you don't get to tell minorities not to make use of the tools legally available for self defense. We indulged you before, when fascism still feared to take over. But they've never been defeated peacefully. Now it's time for liberals to stop whining about us preparing against it. Not like y'all ever did a damn thing to prevent their rise in the first place.

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club 1 points 9 hours ago

Honestly you seem like a child unable to assess the risks. Sure - the odds of any individual in the US being killed with their own gun is small, but it is dramatically higher than the odds of them defending themselves against an assailant. It's just an unnecessary game of russian roulette. Owning a gun is a hazard that makes people significantly less safe than not owning one.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

A drunk guy attacked a STRANGER--the WRONG stranger--for having pride flags on his porch. Even if this stuff is less common than in the past, it's far from gone.

I'm guessing if Wolfe said "Get off my property or I'll shoot you" it might have deterred Jones more than a baseball bat. Maybe not, but the gun still gives you an edge if/when it comes to a fight.

As others have said, if you believe the dangers of a gun in your home outweigh the benefits, then by all means don't own one. I just don't think it's "terrible" advice to own a gun and keep it in a safe location.

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club -1 points 1 day ago

The danger of a gun FAR outweighs the vanishingly rare outliers where a gun is helpful. There is no question about this. Only fevered gun-fondlers can manage to confuse themselves on this issue. It's very very clear.

an alcoholic's chance of getting blackout drunk dramatically increases if they have access to alcohol

does my chance of getting blackout drunk increase if I have access to alcohol (no, it remains zero)

we can all see you deliberately mixing up "the general public" and "a specific named individual," it is obvious fuckery

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

we are talking about populations, not some specific individual.

[–] aaa999@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you literally told a specific individual not to get a gun

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Right - because owning a gun dramatically increases their chances of being the victim of gun violence.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You keep saying that in such vague terms. What exactly do you think is gonna happen?

[–] Terrorphin@thelemmy.club 1 points 9 hours ago

Well what usually happens is that someone is killed with the gun they bought that they thought would make them safer. What don't you understand?
