Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

people avoid deep thinking because it makes them uncomfortable
we don't have any answers to anything and that's unsettling to them
even worse: theories for said answers are more unsettling
Why does it make them uncomfortable? It makes me my most comfortable and it frustrates me when people get stressed by existential stuff, for instance
the same reason running 5 miles is pure torture for someone who isn't a physically fit trained runner and they will likely give out by mile 1 or 2 with their muscles screaming, their lungs burning, and their heart pounding out of their chest in total agony.
running 5 miles only becomes enjoyable when you have trained your body and mind to find it enjoyable and that's going to take weeks or months of effort if you are a coach potato. when you are trained up, running 5 miles is a breeze that's barely harder than walking.
the vast majority of people are mental couch potatoes and find any mental process that is new or challenging to be miserable and they will reject it out of hand for making them feel awful and terrible. and most of the conversations and media they seek out is comforting familiar, and easy.
Which is why the most popular things can't be geared towards anyone who isn't educated beyond 8th grade intellectual abilities. The average reading level of bestselling books is 7th grade and most big movies have stories/plots also at this level.
I have a friend who sends me stuff about living in a simulation. I stopped engaging with them about this because it has absolutely no bearing on anything that could possibly concern me. If it's true, great; of not, just as great. There is no part about living, or not living, in simulation that makes me uncomfortable; it's a pointless topic. I indulged them for a while, but I'm done.
that isn't deep thinking, it's shallow fascination with a fantasy and it's a though experiment that's been around 1000s of years.
Sim theory is super surface level, there's not even a single point of discussion that makes it interesting because everything about sim theory lines up with modern religions.
