Now if you're a Millennial and you're here to get mad and possibly out of a twinge of fear that YOU are a cringe Millennial, I'm near certain that if you're even on this website in the first place that you're one of the ones who made it. But most Millennials didn't.
Millennials were faced early on with a dark truth of reality. They have witnessed the failure of a great many institutions. They have they have borne witness to a great failure of culture, a great failure of institutions, a great failure of the state. A double whammy of 9/11 and the subprime mortgage disaster. The Millennial was born into a system that failed, and the nihilism set in. They knew they were not going to have the same benefits as their parents, as their grandparents. And rather rather than being like, oh thank God these these decrepit institutions are failing, now we can change it the path that would have led them here to Communistic thought, they fled the opposite direction. They bought in wholesale to the media of their childhood. Similar to how the overbearing "cute" aesthetics of anime were a response to the undeniable realities of The Bomb, the Millennial took the undeniable realities of the failure of capitalism and fled to consumer nihilism, and built their entire identity around that.
In the past, kids would grow up and make fun of what they enjoyed as kids. They'd mock it relentlessly. They thought it was stupid, because it was. All those CN shows that Millennials love jacking off to so much would take potshots at the Hannah Barbera cartoon shit their creators got raised on constantly. There was no reverence. Maybe the occasional little nod would slip in, but they were LIVING. They were DOING. They hadn't bought in to "their" media. But the cringe Millennial bought in to media. They bought in wholesale. Their identity became formed by this escape route. You can see this in the online media they create. Millennials in effect created the internet "culture" as we know it now, and you can tell, because the Internet has for the life of it been nothing but a place to talk about objects and media that you consume. Here we go to talk about sports, here we go to talk about Nintendo, here we go to talk about Xbox, here we go to wack off to exclusively animated porn of characters form cartoons we saw as kids. All content is meta-content. New works are not produced, only an ouroborostic dissection and re-dissection of existing works. People don't even play games any more, they just watch videos of other people talking about games.
And sure a lot of these people who bought into this wholesale did well enough. They've managed to carve out spaces and "identities" (if you can call it that, as it is all just a repackaging of other peoples' material) for themselves, but they they lost a larger and more meaningful culture. It is a total abandonment and neglect of creativity. The Millennial is in a constant state of reference. There there is no defining Millennial art movement. There is no defining Millennial music. There is no defining Millennial zeitgeist. The failure of of financial institutions and the world around them led them to to deny the reality before them and to escape back back into their childhood, back into Pokemon and Digimon and Nintendo. They sort themselves into Hogwarts houses instead of something that truly matters. With the genuine connective power of the internet they had the chance to continue the cycle of creation of culture, and instead they drank fully of popular media. Endless reference, endless homage. Endless slop. The Millennial goes out in public dressed like a Steven Universe or Homestuck or Vivziepop character because they is genuinely all they know. They do not know themselves. They only know media.
The GenZ and GenA mocking relentlessly the cringe Millennial, mocking their displays of soy consumerism, mocking their breaking down in tears at the trailer for a Star Wars movie, is a sign of great hope. The GenZ is not devoid of personality, like some breathless thinkpieces would have you believe. They are only devoid of the Millennial's artificial fetal media worship "personality". They and GenA have the potential to be forces of great destructive renewal. And I personally look ofrward to it. Even if nothing new is produced still, at least the old will have finally been swept out.
Obvious bait. Like really obvious because of the really blatent projection and outright lies, but whatever sometimes ranting is fun so I'll bite:
I hate to break it to you but you're just describing nerd culture, which has always existed. If you think the other generations aren't just as if not more consumerist, I dunno I guess you might be out of touch. I guess consumerism is fine if it's because an influencer showed off their fashion hauls?
You're just letting generarional warfare brainworms distract you from actual issues with fake culture war ones. It's blue hair liberals again but changed for new social norms. It's actually funny that you equate millennials with popular mainstream consumerism and lack of creativity, when we were the first to start shitting on mainstream media and start creating alternatives on the internet. Indie games, video, music. Of course that all eventually got poisoned by capitalism too the same way the mainstream did, but that literally happens to everything under capitalism.
It's honestly kind of pathetic to see people so easily manipulated by really basic social posturing. It's funny you should call your attitude new, because it's actually old news. It's been done before, in the 80s. It sucked.
Eventually people are going to burn out on this fake maturity again because it's exhausting, repressive and disingenuous. You want to talk about growing out of something? Grow out of being a pick me teenager that treats maturity as an aesthetic. Actual adults have always liked childish shit. Boomers like Minions and their parents liked train sets. Gen Z plays Minecraft and blows money on gacha games and Gen A loves Roblox. Turns out you have to have fun or you'll end up miserable. Not our fault capitalism poisons any entertainment that gets popular.
In otherwords, grow up, stop letting articles from The Economist trick you into generalising entire generations and be cringe, dumbass.
This thread has me wanting to say "doggo" and "pupper" out of spite.
Fuck I forgot entirely about the awful infantilized language they love to trot out. Thanks for reminding me.
Aww UwU is da widdle baby scawd of some siwwy souwnding wowrds? Oh noes! I beddew put awn my big boi shoes and do my taxes or dae might cwy awoooo

Idk, the cringe cop in my mind still has beaten down my ability to enjoy things to the point it's hard for me to tell. I hate seeing the same shit that made me so hollow get perpetuated though, like what OP is doing.
I didn't even spot any and I have an eye for such things!

put no effort in writing his enonce'iations
Yes, and it was awful then too. But the Millennials are the first ones to ONLY have that, near as I can tell. The teen writing smutty Star Trek fanfic in the 60s had something outside of that going on in their internal lives.
Absolutely not that's even worse. At least the others I was ranting about have some passion driving them. Those people don't even have that.
We'll see if you're still singing that tune next time you see someone posting their Funko Pop shelf.
It wasnt teens writing smutty star trek fanfic. It was housewives who had their lives restricted by systemic forces. Sound similar?
Well yeah personally I consider Funko Pops ugly. Uniquely so.
But I'm not going to blame Millennials for them, considering Millennials, myself included, are the ones that shit on them? I'm also not going to shit on the entire concept of people collecting something from a thing they like, especially as an autistic person.
Wrong, like holy shit old Gen X and Boomer Trekies and D&D nerds basically invented the 'nerd with no life' trope. Also who the fuck cares if people are into their hobbies? This is just conservative style shaming people into being good little cogs with zero hobbies outside of work, sleep, produce child for machine.
I'm sure shaming people into only having hobbies that your personally find totally cool and not cringe will inspire a ton of passion and not just make people scared to try anythibg outaise thw box out of fear of being seen as childish and weird.
Some Millennials reject them but they're also the sole demographic that buys them! Have you ever seen anyone younger than 30 own a Funko Pop?
I don't know anyone who does personally. It's only something I've ever seen on reddit a few times. I've maybe seen a coulple of Gen Xers buy them at the store like ten years ago I think?
Also even if that was the case it doesn't even matter. It's completely missing the forest for the trees. It's like blaming women for an uncool make up tend because women are the biggest consumers of make up.
Can confirm, well at least my buddy collects them and he's 45. Personally I think they're incredibly atrocious and tacky, but he deserves to like what he likes /shrug
I have no patience for 'let people enjoy things" and you shouldn't either.
Gen x have their beanie babies, gen z have their labubus.
Hummel figurines for the boomers

Yeah that’s the problem, your experience with this is entirely online. You’re looking at internet bullshit and presuming it’s an accurate representation of the wider culture. Thats mostly untrue now, and it was completely untrue prior to 2014-2015ish. And prior to 2007, the internet was for fucking losers and represented like 1% of all people.
