Now if you're a Millennial and you're here to get mad and possibly out of a twinge of fear that YOU are a cringe Millennial, I'm near certain that if you're even on this website in the first place that you're one of the ones who made it. But most Millennials didn't.

Millennials were faced early on with a dark truth of reality. They have witnessed the failure of a great many institutions. They have they have borne witness to a great failure of culture, a great failure of institutions, a great failure of the state. A double whammy of 9/11 and the subprime mortgage disaster. The Millennial was born into a system that failed, and the nihilism set in. They knew they were not going to have the same benefits as their parents, as their grandparents. And rather rather than being like, oh thank God these these decrepit institutions are failing, now we can change it the path that would have led them here to Communistic thought, they fled the opposite direction. They bought in wholesale to the media of their childhood. Similar to how the overbearing "cute" aesthetics of anime were a response to the undeniable realities of The Bomb, the Millennial took the undeniable realities of the failure of capitalism and fled to consumer nihilism, and built their entire identity around that.

In the past, kids would grow up and make fun of what they enjoyed as kids. They'd mock it relentlessly. They thought it was stupid, because it was. All those CN shows that Millennials love jacking off to so much would take potshots at the Hannah Barbera cartoon shit their creators got raised on constantly. There was no reverence. Maybe the occasional little nod would slip in, but they were LIVING. They were DOING. They hadn't bought in to "their" media. But the cringe Millennial bought in to media. They bought in wholesale. Their identity became formed by this escape route. You can see this in the online media they create. Millennials in effect created the internet "culture" as we know it now, and you can tell, because the Internet has for the life of it been nothing but a place to talk about objects and media that you consume. Here we go to talk about sports, here we go to talk about Nintendo, here we go to talk about Xbox, here we go to wack off to exclusively animated porn of characters form cartoons we saw as kids. All content is meta-content. New works are not produced, only an ouroborostic dissection and re-dissection of existing works. People don't even play games any more, they just watch videos of other people talking about games.

And sure a lot of these people who bought into this wholesale did well enough. They've managed to carve out spaces and "identities" (if you can call it that, as it is all just a repackaging of other peoples' material) for themselves, but they they lost a larger and more meaningful culture. It is a total abandonment and neglect of creativity. The Millennial is in a constant state of reference. There there is no defining Millennial art movement. There is no defining Millennial music. There is no defining Millennial zeitgeist. The failure of of financial institutions and the world around them led them to to deny the reality before them and to escape back back into their childhood, back into Pokemon and Digimon and Nintendo. They sort themselves into Hogwarts houses instead of something that truly matters. With the genuine connective power of the internet they had the chance to continue the cycle of creation of culture, and instead they drank fully of popular media. Endless reference, endless homage. Endless slop. The Millennial goes out in public dressed like a Steven Universe or Homestuck or Vivziepop character because they is genuinely all they know. They do not know themselves. They only know media.

The GenZ and GenA mocking relentlessly the cringe Millennial, mocking their displays of soy consumerism, mocking their breaking down in tears at the trailer for a Star Wars movie, is a sign of great hope. The GenZ is not devoid of personality, like some breathless thinkpieces would have you believe. They are only devoid of the Millennial's artificial fetal media worship "personality". They and GenA have the potential to be forces of great destructive renewal. And I personally look ofrward to it. Even if nothing new is produced still, at least the old will have finally been swept out.

Vibes based generational analysis is cringe, it is unforgivable, and I will not be gaslit otherwise.

[–] SerialExperimentsGay@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

Is there literally anything you enjoy? I've never seen you mention any piece of art or media that you do not viscerally hate, one time you even got mad at Disco Elysium for completely misunderstanding the finale.

Zero historical material analysis is wild. You act like happy days wasn't one of the biggest shows of the 80s. Like my grandma didn't sit around watching reruns of Matlock. Like Christmas isn't just boomer nostalgia day. Yes millennial love references, but that's because we had a shared culture to reference. What does Gen Z and A have? Endless online arguments and a million things designed in a lab to grab their attention. Yes, millennials attached themselves too strongly to the media they consumed, but my god how many of us were raised by working parents, especially after 2008? That's all we knew since we were kids.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Or hell, if they want to bring up media millennials enjoyed, Johnny Bravo and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law were nothing but love letters to the 1970s, which goes into the face of "nobody did nostalgia beforehand" thesis.

soy consumerism

I'm consuming soy this very moment, eating tofu puffs for lunch. Cry about it

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The unironic derogatory use of "soy" on this site can get pretty sad sometimes.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

"The problem with capitalist consumerism is that it makes men effeminate" - a very reasonable opinion to have on a left-wing forum

Ascribes to generational stereotypes, hates Millenials, and puts Genz on a pedestal.

Gen Z will execute you for being a poster on this website while they gorge themselves on Spider Man 436 but hey, at least you won’t be woke

Obvious bait. Like really obvious because of the really blatent projection and outright lies, but whatever sometimes ranting is fun so I'll bite:

I hate to break it to you but you're just describing nerd culture, which has always existed. If you think the other generations aren't just as if not more consumerist, I dunno I guess you might be out of touch. I guess consumerism is fine if it's because an influencer showed off their fashion hauls?

You're just letting generarional warfare brainworms distract you from actual issues with fake culture war ones. It's blue hair liberals again but changed for new social norms. It's actually funny that you equate millennials with popular mainstream consumerism and lack of creativity, when we were the first to start shitting on mainstream media and start creating alternatives on the internet. Indie games, video, music. Of course that all eventually got poisoned by capitalism too the same way the mainstream did, but that literally happens to everything under capitalism.

It's honestly kind of pathetic to see people so easily manipulated by really basic social posturing. It's funny you should call your attitude new, because it's actually old news. It's been done before, in the 80s. It sucked.

Eventually people are going to burn out on this fake maturity again because it's exhausting, repressive and disingenuous. You want to talk about growing out of something? Grow out of being a pick me teenager that treats maturity as an aesthetic. Actual adults have always liked childish shit. Boomers like Minions and their parents liked train sets. Gen Z plays Minecraft and blows money on gacha games and Gen A loves Roblox. Turns out you have to have fun or you'll end up miserable. Not our fault capitalism poisons any entertainment that gets popular.

In otherwords, grow up, stop letting articles from The Economist trick you into generalising entire generations and be cringe, dumbass.

Do you enjoy calling things (and people) "cringe" unironically?

[–] average@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago

The generational blame game is so lame. It never seems to achieve anything except perpetuate its own narrative.

We've been having these discussions for like 3000 years. Yes it has everything to do with the relations to the means of production and the way society distributes them. How these relationships evolve throughout the passage of time, who is in control? marx-joker

There is nothing inherently progressive about the youth rebelling, without a healthy direction, these people might as well get funneled into harmful heaps of trash like the Aryan Myth or Zionism

Okay I’ll mark out. You seem focused on nerd and internet culture. These areas were and kind of still are mostly millennials, but they don’t represent most of millennials. Nerd culture has always been consumeristic, escapist bullshit for baby-brained social idiots. It’s just that in the 2010s, under millennials watch, nerd culture broke containment and went mainstream. That’s not a cultural issue, that ultimately comes down to technology and real estate creating situations where more kids were stuck in their rooms, where they had their own PC for the first time, because there’s nowhere to go and hangout with their friends where they could have any kind of privacy.

There there is no defining Millennial art movement.

“American rustic” “geo-boho” or whatever you wanna call the early 2010s graphic design style that took classic rustic Americana elements executed in hyper-minimalism. Think every menu at every hipster bar. In the actual art world, pop-surrealism was maybe the last big visually aligned art movement to move through gallery spaces, but maybe the influence of cartoons, anime and pop culture on that movement only lends to your point

There is no defining Millennial music.

Emo, dubstep, recession pop, electro-clash. The 2000s and 2010s sounds of dance-punk and indie rock are distinct enough to be their own genres.

There is no defining Millennial zeitgeist

The 2010s social justice movement. It was pink capitalist bullshit, but anyone who says it failed is forgetting how incredibly normalized homophobia used to be. Youth culture in the 90s and early 2000s was fucking obsessed with shitting on gay people. It informed every conversation. Millenial cringe humor, the ironic moustaches, the silly cartoony over-expressed smiles in pictures, were very much a reaction against how restrictive youth culture was in the nu-metal and bling rap eras. Anything that wasn’t tough was gay and everything gay was bad.

I might just be projecting but this sounds vaguely ableist.

[–] Athena5898@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

eh the only thing cringe here is the lack of any real analysis and just going off of vibes. Also, I feel the need to grab any millennial in the comments going after the younger generation by the scruff and shake them. The kids are fine. But they are kids ffs. I think the oldest are just getting into their 20s ffs. Given the number of them who have already tried to spur movements for Free Palestine and ICE I think they are doing just fine. The only Millennial I'm going to judge harshly in a unique way from any other generation is anyone who is going after the generations behind us, given that we were the last chance of any "normal". Besides, any failure that is happening with them is on our shoulders. It is our job to teach the younger generations what reactionary is without being a reactionary little fuck ourselves.

[–] userse31@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

I want to go around to my gen z peers and "chew them a new asshole" for hating on gen alpha.

Yeah, perpetuate the hating of the younger generations. Brilliant!

[–] imogen_underscore@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

pure idealist nonsense
