Farmer trusted AI after it gave good advice, then it helped wipe out 25 acres of his crops

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
The real tragedy here is a 67 year old still working a farm.
I know a guy in his late 80's who's still farming. He's told me a million times that the day he stops farming will be the day that he dies, and I believe him. He's got enough money to retire - he's just in it for the love of the game.
He’s outstanding in his field.
Ok take my upvote and get out
That joke is as old as agriculture, but thanks. See ya!
You really out there planting your seed or something
I heard rural China isn't nearly as developed as you'd think as a westerner. We mainly look at all the modern cities and regions which have become the factory of the world.
True, but the bloke has access to a.i. so he can't be that far off the beaten track. Chuzhou looks like it's a pretty sizeable city as well.
And I'm not sure what that has to do with working until you die. Mind you, I have no retirement savings, so that'll probably be me, too, but at least I'm not doing hard physical labour.
A lot of farmers love the land. I had loved ones who kept boutique farming between chemo treatments. Nurturing living things to do cool stuff for people (like be food and clothes and drugs) is gratifying. People just want to do that sometimes.
He just needs to be somewhere with cell phone service.
There are rural areas of the world where people still use oxen to pull their plows rather than a tractor, but these days they have cell phones.
Have you seen the average age of an American farmer?
Isn't the average American farmer a megacorporation or investment fund these days?
https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2024/02-13-2024.php as of 2022 average age was 58.1 years old. Depends somewhat on the industry often mega corps know they can't farm and are just Monopsonys driving more and more farmers out of business as they lower prices paid to farmers and increase prices paid to the public. Clearly not short sighted at all what could go wrong....
