A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.

at a minimum, the normal minimum wage that everyone would normally get in their country, like any job.
Why is this job being looked at or treated differently then other employment?
I was gonna say, the minimum at minimum. That's around 13€/h for my country. Now I would hope depending on the restaurant they would also be paid more, maybe 16€/h or something, because being a server can be extremely taxing. Depending on the place, people can be awful.
I think part if the issue is that it's not a normal 8 hour shift, especially in nicer restaurants that may be open 11-2 and 5-10 plus prep/cleanup.
But people get paid per hour?
agreed, I'm not saying it should be minimum but it shouldn't be any lower because minimum is the law. that's up to negotiations on however baseline wages for every job were set.
So part time work?
It's just a very weird schedule and servers that I've known sometimes end up working 11-2 and then 6-11, or something like that, if they want the hours. They send you home when business slows down so a planned 6 hour dinner shift can switch to much less if it's a slow night.
If minimum wage is $8/hr and a server earns $2 plus $40 in tips, why would servers want to change that system?
Even in your example $8*8= $64, while 2*8+40=56.
The only reason servers prefer tips is because of the expectation to tip. It's all a strategy to mask real dish prices with lower prices (lmao, not even, the baseline price is even more expensive than generally in Europe (more than expensive locations of Spain, France and Germany, my points of reference)).
The only one who ends up winning is the owner.
8 x 42, though it's really more like 5 x 42.
