I always forget how much of Lemmy lets Hexbear live rent free in their minds. We barely interact with them at all lol.

Feels like something from before my time in the Fediverse. Only really heard of hex when posts from y'all started popping up in "top" after moving to .zip (specifically bc they don't do defeds).

hexbear was originally a completely separate website that was built out of the same code as lemmy, and was eventually merged with the rest of the fediverse well after a specific culture was able to develop here. Federation was WILD

Lemmy also didn’t have support for federation when Hexbear first popped up, and the Hexbear devs were a couple weeks away from finishing de-forking their older codebase so they could hop back on the main, federation-capable Lemmy codebase when the Reddit API exodus happened. Awesome timing.
