The original re4 was good enough it basically invented the over the shoulder shooter. It's a bit of a rough play if you're not used to the archaic controls, but worth a shot if you're interested in the history of that sort of thing.

I would have guessed that was Gears of War, but we're in a PC gaming comm and that was an Xbox game. I never much cared for the format, personally.

Capcom and funky controls though... I probably wouldn't have even considered Pragmata if it weren't for the demo. The game plays okay. Controlling two characters at once is part of the gimmick, and it works for me better than I expected it to.

Anyway, I remember playing RE3 and one called Code Veronica, not sure what number that was, and they weren't bad, but there was something magical about the first two. I think the genre shifted after those (or after RE3), kind of like how the Mass Effect games look very similar, but the first one is more RPG and the latter two are more cover shooters.

Code: Veronica hasn’t had a number, it was a spin-off for the Dreamcast (before being ported, but never made part of the official series).

Oh I was a huge Gears of War fan during the time. Interestingly enough, Cliff Bleszinski, the Game Designer has cited Resident Evil 4 being a major influence in the over the shoulder. I watched many interviews when I was younger I also remember them talking about how running in GoW only made you run 10% faster lol

Cool to reminisce

I'm actually kind of happy to see someone make the distinction between the mass effects like that. The controls were definitely better as the series went on, but god ME1 just hits me perfectly, jank and all.

Gears kind of piggybacked off what Re4 did, and steered the third person genre into a cover shooter genre for a while. I'd say the controls are a huge improvement in gears.

Gears of war invented to cover shooter.

Gears came out nearly two full years after RE4. It was one of the most influential games of all time for sure, and began taking the RE series in a more action orientated direction. It returned to its survival horror roots, but with a twist as the first game in first person, with RE7 and it was a real return to form.
