I'm actually kind of happy to see someone make the distinction between the mass effects like that. The controls were definitely better as the series went on, but god ME1 just hits me perfectly, jank and all.

Gears kind of piggybacked off what Re4 did, and steered the third person genre into a cover shooter genre for a while. I'd say the controls are a huge improvement in gears.
