Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Mbin most definitely federates to Lemmy but I am surprised to hear it can't federate to PieFed: Are you sure that's true?
No, I'm not.
Can you give me an example of an Mbin community and instance? I can try to hit them from here and see if that works.
Mbin content certainly doesn't seem to appear in my ALL feed, for what that's worth.
Fedia.io and Kbin.Earth are probably the two biggest
I can indeed do a community search upon both those instances, but the results seem depressed and incomplete. For example, with Fedia.io, the top three /c's with the most active people listed are:
-News from fediverse@fedia.io / 118
-B-side Gaming@fedia.io / 54
-Firefox@fedia.io / 17
And the pickings drop pretty quickly from there. That's out of a few dozen communities (or is it "magazines?") that show up in such a search.
Meanwhile, a Kbin.Earth search returns a paltry dozen places, almost all of them stone-dead. So... something is clearly not working in the federation process, is it?
That or people just use Mbin to browse other platforms like Lemmy, but not to host magazines (communities in Lemmy parlance). I mod with someone who is on an Mbin platform but the community they created and mod is on Lemmy.
I don't know, maybe those two instances show up sometimes in my ALL feed, and I just didn't realise it. I'll have to pay closer attention in future...
Then again, those searches I did above simply can't be complete if those are truly the two biggest Mbin instances.
FWIW, I threw this one out to GPT 5.4, and:
