Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

didn't know "pancake mixes" are a thing until i met a certain someone online <3

alternative image link (blahaj zone)

in germany, "pancakes" are usually very flat, almost becoming crepes. i like em ~ u roll em up and eat em ~ ~ ~

apparently, american pancakes* are thick. like - 3 centimeters thick. u can't roll those! wowie zowie.

i put brainmade tag instead of my previous no ai cuz.... eh - i felt like it.
"no ai" implies "free of slop" meanwhile "brainmade" implies "a human thought about and made this".... which feels nicer to say to me. also it fits that thing this no boilerplate guy made so horray iguess----

also, this song found in the latest 8th episode of the amazing digital circus was very nice. i pirated it and luv it ~ ~ ~ ~

it makes me think and i like thinking.

also!!!! im lookin for - im lookin for peeps to play some gems with----

so like

if u got like umm - a switch 2 or switch 1 (with some games) then like - um-- maybe put a comment if u wanna--- dunno

for switch 2 ownersi got some online game share games, so u dont even need to own the games - huzza.

im not zitrone, i'm lime! i've been here a while.

and no, it's a great post! makes you think about stuff, like most things you do! i see how you could have taken it that way though, sorry about that.

i was trying to say that the human intention behind something is what really matters, regardless of the tools used. i know you've dabbled in llms before, and i think that's fine as long as it's with a purpose. my main definition of slop is things that are made without a purpose, like just filling websites with text or corporote placeholder art. even the worst quality human-made thing imaginable is better than that because someone wanted to make it.

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

yesyes i very much see it similarly.

but um... i have ti disappoint u: there was no purpose for me dabbling with LMs >~< i just did it cuz i find the topic intellectually stimulating and - and - it feels kinda fun making "UIs" for - for text predictors and ----.,.,.,..,,...... there was no purpose >o< aaaaa im sorryyyy ;((((((((

me yapping about my profsurprisingly, my professors at uni are - WAY more into all that generative stuff than i am, but they dont.... well- they dont hesitate to just show output and use image gen just to.... fill slides with something.... which is unfortunate.

my biochemistry prof, who was previously my fav (cuz he just seems so intelligent, honest and fun to interact with) now puts his "own" character "Dr. Bubbles" into his slides.... whiiiiich is gpt-image-gen V1 output... he really leans into this stuff.

i totally get it for studying purposes, but this--- has no purpose, really.... im disappointed in him and hope to not... become like him.

anyway, woah lime 🍋‍🟩 has been around for some time already? how did i not notice before?

hellooooooo dear lime 🍋‍🟩 ~ ~ ~
(now i will remember)

i do the same thing! that's not disappointing at all, i totally get it. i run and tweak local diffusion models and compressed llms because i want to see how i can bend and break them, and how they react to out-of-set data. i never share any outputs because that's not the interesting part. the purpose is learning! that's a great purpose!

my bosses were the same as your lecturers. for the christmas party last year they made an ai image of themselves as gingerbread men and the result was truly horrifying. they also sent like weekly chatgpt-generated motivational poems in the company newsletter. thank god i am not at that place anymore, some people are waaaaay to into this stuff.

i think the reason you might not have noticed is because we got off on the wrong foot the first few interactions :( the first few times i saw you comment i couldn't really read your way of writing because of esl brain. when i mentioned that, it seemed to make you sad and i felt really bad about it... then it turned out i have one of those mobile clients that don't do display names so i got your name wrong and i felt really bad about that too... but i have you tagged now and i read everything you post and i love your takes on things and the energy you bring. also also, even though i know it wasn't fun for you i really must thank you for your writing changes, it makes it a lot easier for me to follow. i hope you can still get an outlet for that somewhere :(

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

yyyyes, the thing about the gpt-generated poems and christmas images.... I had the exact same thing with my old IT-admin coworkers.... some of the older ones, he was like 40 or so....

also, yesyes of course, i realized how... i was going too far outside the window with some of these... like I wasnt just reaching my hand out, I was essentially ha ging outside ha ging on by my fingers-- it was too much and u were right to point me out.

by now i switched the "outlet" from funi words to.... umm-.... well - I switched it to......... this feels weird to say, but who cares, its not like my future employer will read this - HA!

i switched it to babytalk some peeps. that scratches the same itch i believe ~

anyway, im happy that we are now each walking with two good and stable feet with stable legs attached.

also thank u very very much for what u said about my posts and stuff <3
