Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is one of many rallies in Iran in support of the government and the leadership.

short summary here, longish summary in spoiler tags below: Western standoff munition stockpiles now substantially depleted, therefore Western aircraft activity directly over Iran increasing (as is footage of attempted and actual hits against them) as the US attempts to transition more to using bombs dropped directly onto targets, Iran is increasingly in the driver's seat and controlling the conflict, world economy is fucked and yet could still get much worse very soon, if you require a car to live (especially if it's not electric) and cannot work from home then you have my sincere condolences

longish summary hereWhile I've seen several estimates on the current stockpiles of US and Zionist missiles and interceptors - somewhere in the realm of a third depleted, perhaps even up to half - it seems like we're reaching the point at which the US does not want to commit even more standoff munitions and is trying their luck against the Iranian air defense network directly.

We have already seen footage of Iran attempting to shoot down, and sometimes actually striking Western fifth generation planes like the F-35, and more footage along those lines is appearing for other plane models (with one side claiming that they evaded interception and the other claiming they hit it, etc etc, propaganda is everywhere, you know the drill). How much the US is willing to test their planes against Iranian air defense is a matter of debate. Strictly speaking, a few fighter jets and bombers shot down would be no catastrophic loss in the grand scheme of things, as the US has hundreds. However, the narrative of such a thing would be quite bad for the US - "You're telling me an OBLITERATED Iranian military can shoot down some of our most advanced equipment?? What are we gonna do against China?!" - and given Trump's deranged jingoistic rhetoric aimed to buoy markets, it's clear that he cares very deeply about narratives. Additionally, with Chinese exports of several critical metals to the US banned, the prospect of replacing these aircraft (and indeed the standoff munitions and the interceptors and the ground radars etc) is looking questionable.

All the while, Iran continues its strikes across the Middle East. Missile and drone strikes are reportedly on the uptick again, demonstrating that Iranian military capabilities have by no means been "destroyed" as Western propaganda claim, though it's impossible to sure there was ever a significant downtick due to Western censorship and outright fabrications. People around the world are gradually realizing the magnitude of the economic disaster that is occurring and may yet occur. Refineries and factories which deal with oil and gas directly are starting to slow down or stop production, and those who make products downstream of those are starting to follow them like dominoes. Outrage at gas station prices is rising, and many countries are considering limiting civilian driving and implementing work-from-home policies akin to the coronavirus pandemic. And now, threats are being made by Trump against both Kharg Island (where most Iranian oil is shipped from) and the Iranian electrical grid - which is highly decentralized and would require a prolonged bombing campaign to completely take out -and the promised Iranian reprisal would be apocalyptic to the Middle East. It would make oil prices rise to previously unfathomable heights as oil infrastructure turned off and remained off for months, perhaps years, and set in motion one of the world's greatest humanitarian catastrophes as the desalination necessary for tens of millions of people is shut down. It would also not be a symmetrical problem, as Iran does not rely on desalination for its water supply.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

The United States is said to have sent Iran a plan to end the war. - NYT update

Full textThe United States has sent Iran a 15-point plan to end the war in the Middle East, according to two officials briefed on the diplomacy, reflecting the Trump administration’s eagerness to find an offramp from the conflict as it grapples with its economic fallout.

It was unclear how widely the plan, delivered by way of Pakistan, had been shared among Iranian officials and whether Iran was likely to accept it as a basis for negotiations. Nor was it clear whether Israel, which has been bombing Iran together with the United States, was on board with the proposal.

But the delivery of the plan showed that the administration was ramping up efforts to conclude a war, now in its fourth week, that has drawn in several other countries.

The New York Times did not see a copy of the plan, but the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive details, shared some of its broad outlines, saying that it addresses Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

Israel and the United States have targeted Iran’s ballistic missiles, launchers and production facilities, and its nuclear program in the bombing campaign that began on Feb. 28. American and Israeli leaders have vowed never to allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon.

But Iran has continued to fire missiles at Israel and neighboring Arab countries and still holds 440 kilograms of highly enriched uranium in its territory.

The plan also discusses maritime routes, one of the officials said. Since the beginning of the war, Iran has effectively blocked most Western ships from safely passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway in and out of the Persian Gulf, cutting the global supply of oil and natural gas, and sending the prices soaring.

For now, there is no indication that the war will let up imminently; Israeli officials have said they expect it to continue for weeks. In a statement, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, acknowledged diplomacy was underway, but said, “As President Trump and his negotiators explore this newfound possibility of diplomacy, Operation Epic Fury continues unabated to achieve the military objectives laid out by the Commander in Chief and the Pentagon.”

Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has emerged as the key interlocutor between the United States and Iran, with Egypt and Turkey encouraging the Iranians to engage constructively, the officials added. Field Marshal Munir is believed to maintain close ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, putting him in a position to pass messages between the warring sides, they said.

He recently reached out to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s Parliament and a former Revolutionary Guards commander, proposing that Pakistan host talks between Iran and the United States, said an Iranian official and a Pakistani official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive communications.

Field Marshal Munir met twice in 2025 with President Trump, who has showered praise on him, saying he was his “favorite field marshal.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan wrote on social media that his country “fully supports ongoing efforts to pursue dialogue to end” the war in the Middle East.

“Subject to concurrence by the US and Iran, Pakistan stands ready and honoured to be the host to facilitate meaningful and conclusive talks for a comprehensive settlement of the ongoing conflict,” he wrote.

Iran may have trouble delivering a quick response to American outreach. Senior Iranian officials have been struggling to communicate internally and they worry that Israel could bomb them if they meet in person, the officials added.

On the first day of the war, Israel struck an Iranian leadership compound in Tehran, killing Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and many other top officials. Who now holds the power to make decisions on diplomacy, war and peace remains to be seen.

But the eagerness of the White House to negotiate suggests that Mr. Trump would be willing to leave the current regime in place, at least for now, albeit in a weakened and more pliant state. He and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel have vacillated on whether their demands for the war included regime change.

Trump is so fucking 19th century military pilled, you could make the man support the CPC if you sent a heap of tall generals with more grandiose titles and uniforms to his office.

In Trump's decaying brain - he surely thinks "straight out of central casting" is the most important thing in the world. If he met a military guy of genius who happened to have a mustache* or a beard - he'd probably immediately think they were an incompetent moron.

---

*Ninja edit. I assume a Brit with a mustache probably passes muster because Trump saw highly successful guys like that in movies and on the teevee when he was young.

Officials say Trump was hesitant about hiring Bolton because of his mustache

Aides told The Washington Post in 2016 that Bolton’s facial hair was one of several reasons Trump didn’t pick him as his secretary of State. And The New York Times’s Maggie Haberman reported Thursday that Trump spent a significant amount of time deriding Bolton for the mustache.

@InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 's theory about British mustaches is still possible. Trump is not yet on the record as to how he feels about Kitchener or The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

[–] manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml 3 points 12 hours ago

iirc a lot of the clean shaven - no facial hair, short head hair, thing came about because of trench warfare, and specifically being able to properly affix a gas mask. Something about the toothbrush ~~hitler~~ moustache

i was told this in tertiary education, the same class we watched guns, germs and steel, so it could actually be hogwash

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 9 points 17 hours ago

I wonder how many top British WW I and WW II guys had mustaches.

Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (17 November 1887 – 24 March 1976), nicknamed "Monty", was a senior British Army officer who served in the First World War, the Irish War of Independence and the Second World War.

Maybe the mustache stuff is complicated for Trump. He might attach a certain amount of Britishness to mustaches. So if Trump is thinking about putting some Texas judge chud with a strong and broad accent into a higher position - Trump might reject him if he has a mustache. But Trump might like a mustachioed candidate with a mid-Atlantic accent.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 10 points 18 hours ago

When the news broke that Bolton was got his gig in Trump 1.0 - I was actually shocked. But he has a mustache!

---

Also - it's hilarious to consider how many wacko rightwing judges missed their opportunity to get much more prestigious judgeships because they had facial hair but they didn't shave it off because they were some combination of stupid, arrogant, or prideful. Trump doesn't care about you or your rulings. He's gonna look at an 8 by 10 (or whatever) and most likely put you directly into the "no" pile if you don't look the part.

Think of President Xi: central casting, brilliant guy. When I say he’s brilliant, everyone says, ‘Oh, that’s terrible.’ He runs 1.4 billion people with an iron fist: smart, brilliant, everything perfect. There is nobody in Hollywood like this guy,

Trump said in remarks from the White House’s State Dining Room. Xi called over to aides, Trump said, noting the Chinese president has "got people standing behind him. Everyone is central casting – central casting. Glasses. Pad. Boom.”

American 15 point plan:

1: Say that we beat you

2: Say that we beat you, but louder

3: Let us pick your government for you

4: Give us all your oil

5: Give us a bunch of money too

6: Dismantle your entire army

7: Dismantle your entire navy

8: Dismantle your entire air force

9: Let us bomb you whenever we want and don't fight back

10: Send all your scientists over to the US so they can build missiles for us, our scientists keep moving overseas for some reason. No, we won't pay them.

11: Declare your undying support for Israel as the master of the middle east

12: Uhh...Oh! No nooculer stuff anymore, that was our excuse for attacking you, right?

13: It's really hard to think of 15 things, umm...give as all your money, but like, more of it.

14: Oh, the hogs were demanding an Iranian onlyFans, so do whatever that is.

15: Umm...Say that Trump is a better president than Obama.

If the Iranian govt surrenders its nuclear and/or missile programs I will become a evangelical Iranian Monarchist and hope the Shah fucks up so bad the commies turn the country into mecha-Albania

[–] sodium_nitride@hexbear.net 19 points 19 hours ago (3 children)

Is it just or is the 15-point plan missing and just not there? Like what are the US demands? Or does the NYT also not know and it's a secret plan?

[–] Salah@hexbear.net 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The article says the plan wasn’t shared with NYT

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/24/trumps-rehashed-15-point-iran-plan-unlikely-to-appease-tehran

It looks like it might literally be what they tried to push last May, before they bombed Iran during negotiations the first time.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 16 points 19 hours ago

I didn't bother to read the article. I assumed there were no details because Trump keeps talking right out of ass and the media - as always - dutifully takes dictation. And even if there are actual written words of this "plan" - Trump totally lied about everything else. People like Jeremy Scahill who report on what the Iranians are actually saying aren't allowed on the MSM and it really pisses me off.
