Or imprisonment.

Point is, that's not what the quote directly said. And that's what distinguishes journalism, and tabloids like DailyBeast (or talking heads/"analysis" like Fox News). Hence, every actual news outlet on this topic went with a factual headline, and quoted Trump directly instead of making a jump.

This distinction is very important to me. Ragebait like DailyBeast is why Trump is in power and the world sucks now, because it works.

I get your point, but the president saying people should get life in prison if not killed for their 1st amendment right which he swore and oath to uphold would be an absolute reason for an immediate impeachment to most.

No, that was bigotry, racism, billionaire-controlled media, voter suppression and foreign interference. The Daily Beast's influence is lost in the noise compared to those factors.

And how likely do you really think it is that Trump would direct the captive, corrupt DoJ to exercise leniency? It's like someone is waving a gun in someone else's face and you're saying "well, ackshually, we don't really know if he intends to use it to intimidate or shoot that guy." And the gunman is a known sadist who places no value on human life.
