Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Fair warning, I'm the mod of !taylorswift@poptalk.scrubbles.tech but hear me out folks.
So I'm no stranger to posts like this at all. I'm no stranger to the peer pressure to not like her by my friends, and everything.
Back story, I had always been hard into zeppelin, pink Floyd, queen, and was one of those "yeah man this is real music". I refused to listen to anything else. It wasn't until I was broken up with over a weekend and was driving home late at night and " You Belong With Me" came on, and it just hit me all over the feels. Completely differently when you've just had your heart ripped out. I couldn't tell anyone, I felt shame because I knew my friends would make fun of me.
So I kept making fun of her trash music, it sucks, it all sounds the same, because that's what my friends did. Then 1989 and Shake it Off came out and it was such a fun song. It didn't have deep lyrics about hobbits or trees or bicycles, but it was fun. And I enjoyed it. So I bought her album. And reputation, and lover. I joined the subreddit and I was gobsmacked. People were welcoming, and loved having me there. It became our fun space where we talked about how a song made us feel, or guessing when the next tour would be.
So my view has been shaped by these memories. There is no such thing as good and bad music. There is no master ranking of songs that say this is good or bad. There are complexities, there is technical difficulty, but those are mechanical. It can't be quantified how a song makes a person feel. So yeah, you may think her songs all sound the same, that they are boring, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy them. Last weekend I both had on my TV The Delicate Sound of Thunder live bluray and the 4k copy of the Reputation stadium album.
It comes down to let people enjoy things. It brings them happiness, so why ruin that?
And final note. The trope of "only young girls like her music"; I'm saying as a near 40 year old man who dressed up with my wife to go to the eras tour, that is an incredibly sexist take.
(If you enjoy her music and want to come over, check us out at !taylorswift@poptalk.scrubbles.tech. No music judgments there)
