Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

forced a woman to give him oral sex when she was in her early teens

Talk about failure as a journalist. I just can’t with these assholes. They’re almost as guilty as Trump in that their word choice helps every last one of those bastards get away with it.

If the GIRL was a TEEN, then she was a CHILD, not a woman. I don’t care about the potential for alternative interpretations here. The frame placed on the situation is done with one word: woman. Not teen. Not child. Not kid. Not girl. “Woman”. Which creates a sideways shift in perception.

I am so sick of this shit.

Again, this isn't a failure, the media is working exactly as intended. They aren't on our side, they're on the side of the ruling class. The ruling class bought and own the media. They aren't going to use the media to criticize themselves.

If we want to see justice, we need to make it. We need to take action. The rules of the system protect the ruling class. We need to break the rules and break the system itself.

The ruling class and Israel control the media

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Israel is a puppet state of the US. It is also controlled by the ruling class.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They wouldn’t need to blackmail our politicians if that was the case . I think you’ve got it backwards it’s us who’s occupied by them. Netynahu is calling the shots Trump is a joke

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I don't have it backwards, I promise you. Israel is a colony set up by the US and the UK with the explicit purpose of advancing their foreign policy goals in the Middle East. The US pretends that Israel is a sovereign nation because the US population would not tolerate their actions if it was their own country.

Israel destabilizes the middle east, making the region ripe for extractionism.

Not all US politicians are aligned with US/Israeli imperialist interests and thus they are bribed, but plenty of them aren't.

Trump is a puppet, but he's not Israel's puppet, he's the puppet of the primarily US-based ruling elite.

Stop spreading their misinfornation for them.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online -1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It started out that way. I don’t think it’s wrong to question the current power dynamics. Why would the US and UK care in the least of some college students are sitting in protest of Gaza? Nothing in that act changes their daily in the least. Nothing.

Unless someone else is calling the shots.

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Because the US (and the UK, a satellite state of the US) support ongoing US imperialist endeavors. Protesting Israel's continued genocide brings awareness to it, and the boycotts, divestments and sanctions (BDS) programs directly fuck up the bag, which is the entire point of colonialism, to get that bag.

Look, I totally understand the temptation to want to shunt everything bad onto Israel. Nobody wants to live in a country that does terrible things, because that makes us all feel a little guilty for not doing more to stop it. I totally get that, and absolutely there is nothing wrong with questioning it. The problem is that most people just arrive at the conclusion that the US is being controlled by Israel with very little understanding of the geopolitics of the region, because it makes them feel better to blame Israel for all of the evil happening.

We need to wake up to the reality of US Imperialism, and stop sticking our heads in the sand.

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Yeah there is a big sibling little sibling dynamic and isreal is not the big sibling.

You would do anything for your little sibling and likewise the US would do anything for Isreal. It's not right but it true, but that doesn't mean they control us.

It's up to us to stop it.

Raped a teenager. That's what he did. He raped a teenage girl .

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 34 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He raped a 13 year old girl. There. I said what should be in the headlines.

“Underage woman” is a phrase used by pedophile supporters.

[–] unnamed1@feddit.org 28 points 2 days ago

Early teens…. This is so disgusting

She was a woman by the time she was able to report it, but it's very poorly worded.

[–] exaybachae@startrek.website 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's a distinct difference between how some of these terms are used depending on context. There is biological status and then there is legal status.

So be careful where & when you take issue.

Here, legal terms are appropriate due to the subject matter, and you should definitely suggest to the authors that they adjust the terms used accordingly.

Just complaing to the ether may be cathartic, but inaction is also complicit.

However teen is a teen regardless of context, as it's a designation of age group, not a legal or biological classification. So it's up to the reader to determine relevance of the teens age beyond that.

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 9 points 1 day ago

Even in paper days journalism deliberately packed their first and second sentences of an article with the most punchy and relevant details because they knew, with every additional sentence, readers were lost.

The line is buried. And could be stated more succinctly with “13 year old girl”, punching in the relevant details.

Instead, extra words are added. It’s deliberate. And it’s journalism’s job not to do this because a large slice of readers will hit only the key words and move on.
