I think it's sad that they're too poor to buy groceries and have made it an identity ๐~this~ ~is~ ~the~ ~only~ ~acceptable~ ~reason~ ~to~ ~hunt~ ~besides~ ~necessary~ ~wildlife~ ~population~ ~control~
Most of the super poor hunters ive known who actually hunt because they're concerned about how much food would cost also have plenty of space in which they could farm vegetables if they wanted to
I'm sure there's someone out there who actually needs to hunt for this reason but I'm gonna need to see some really good evidence if someone tells me it's them
I'm sure it's context and locale dependent but in my experience most poorer people don't have a lot of land or free time. They also might not always bother with licenses, but that's another thing altogether. Farming also takes a long time (though the results can certainly pay off calorically), whereas the results of hunting are near-instantaneous.
That's not to say they won't just plant seeds or forage in unattended areas (berries can be a lifesaver), but a rifle lasts a long time, it only takes a good or lucky shot to take down a deer, and if you have a meat freezer and some experience it can last functionally indefinitely, plus some people will pay good money for certain cuts of it too.
In my area at least, that's mostly true of the urban poor, who aren't big on hunting (because they don't have time or the means to get out there) but not true of the rural poor. The rural poor around here often have quite a lot of free time, and plenty of land on which they could farm (some own the land, some don't, but in either case nobody cares what they do with it). They're poor often because there's simply not a whole lot to do for work, as opposed to in the city where the poor are working all the time and it just pays nothing.
