I'm sure it's context and locale dependent but in my experience most poorer people don't have a lot of land or free time.

In my area at least, that's mostly true of the urban poor, who aren't big on hunting (because they don't have time or the means to get out there) but not true of the rural poor. The rural poor around here often have quite a lot of free time, and plenty of land on which they could farm (some own the land, some don't, but in either case nobody cares what they do with it). They're poor often because there's simply not a whole lot to do for work, as opposed to in the city where the poor are working all the time and it just pays nothing.
