I think it was an attempting to be humorous, those within the cultural hegemony tend to take their way of life for granted and burden those from outside with putting in the work to fit in. Even if they do it subconsciously, that's more or less what is happens.

Still it would be appreciated if tonal indicators were used a lot more frequently. It's also difficult to teach westerners, when critique is met with scorn very often, even though I feel no animosity when I'm trying to educate, nor do I look down upon anyone, unless there's a good reason to.
