If anyone is curious it came about because of back problems. Frakes has back issues and it was easier and less painful to do it that way, it got turned in to a character trait.
Hes also pretty tall, so it worked seamlessly. Patrick stewart would have had to hop over to do the same trick.
Japan has these basically at a few bars I went to. Saves on space as well.
How awkward are they to use?
They're only awkward when you're pissing and someone else is washing their hands.
Depends how you feel about all the cameras
I typically just straddle the bowl, that way I can get two things done at once.
