/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

[–] sirblastalot@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ohhhh they hate nutrek, got it.

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I mean, don't you? It's got uhm... checks notes woke and DEI all in it.

[–] sirblastalot@ttrpg.network 6 points 1 day ago

I was too lazy to make it but I was thinking earlier today of doing a "I hate nutrek because it's derivative and centrist, you hate it because you are a nazi, we are not the same" meme. (Not that I'm calling you a nazi, this was just an idea I had, not directed at you)

Only idiots dislike it for that reason. I dislike it because of its atrocious writing, and its attempts to be progressive are incredibly shallow because the writers are out of touch hollywood socialites.

I've been rewatching TOS. Atrocious writing, you say?

What do you think is shallow about their attempts at being progressive? Having multiple POC and LGBTQ characters, including a married couple seems like the next logical step for the series and is still fairly progressive for a mainstream sci-fi series. Even The Orville, which I've heard people say is better than nutrek, is barely as progressive as even TNG. What did they do wrong with these characters? Genuinely. My main issue with nutrek is the melodrama. So many times while watching Discovery my wife and I would be saying to the screen "You're all about to die, you can hug cry and talk later!"

Just having POC and LGBTQ representation isn't all that's needed to deliver a progressive message. You also need to incorporate plotlines that thoughtfully explore themes related to their modern-day struggles. Old trek, namely TNG and DS9, did this well because they had writers that were genuinely progressive for their time (and even for this time if we're being honest) and actually understood the politics. Despite being held back on direct representation (Garak and Bashir), they were still able to get their message across through the plot structure and story beats.

Nutrek goes all-in on representation, but completely falls flat when they attempt to go any deeper because they don't understand the issues.

Disco lost me when I got to the episode where everyone is going to die unless the main character cAn tAlK tO a bOy aT tHe dAnCe!

Lower Decks was fun though. And I've watched like, 1 episode of SNW but it was a good pilot. Haven't plumbed the depths of the rest of nutrek yet.

Discard Disco like a cokehead fucktoy. Sure, they smash certain checkboxes, but holyfuck what a mess when the lights come on.

Pick up the phone when SNW calls and know that it's a very good friend of Lower Decks.

None of them seem capable of anything like an LTR, but at least the latter two won't give you headcrabs and lie to your face about it.

Actually, Mariner totally would, but I'm here for it. 🤣
