The race is the only thing guiding what is happening

I feel, while AI safety is a valid research topic in a world including AI... This holds way too much truth. Realistically, Elon Musk is just going to wake up some day and say, we do AI porn now. And then AI porn it is for the world. Or whatever dreams Peter Thiel and his friends have during an average night. There's no real incentive to care, they're on the dark side anyway... So maybe discussing academic AI safety research is more some kind of ivory tower thing. How would it be anything else if one of the two big countries remove all regulation?
