news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

I was losing it over seeing an electric car that had its charge port door behind a motorized door. Car "engineers" and "designers" are jokers. Why have a simple latch and spring system, when you can have a slow and easily breakable motor without even an obvious button to open it that you can charge $2000 to repair?
So cool that we bailed these freaks out in 08.
It's to prevent people from opening up the charge port, taking a hose, and sucking out the electricity to funnel into their own cars.
Give the charging cable a little suck first to get the electrons flowing
Don't drink the electrons when you get the siphon going, you'll get a nasty stomach ache
And if you do get a tummy ache, definitely do NOT drink anti-electrons to cancel it out
“Honey I ran a redox reaction and accidentally plated one kid while using the other as a sacrificial anode!”
You know, i heard of this great new invention called a lock and key that prevents people from accessing things that they should not access.
Its not just CAR engineers. Its engineers ime. Theres something about the field that makes people very narrow minded. There's a bridge in vancouver BC canada that when it finally opened they had to shut it down to fix it cause the engineers never even considered that ice would build up on the cables and structure and massive ice bombs were dropping down on cars nearly killing them.

I stg that engineers are all taught to engineer shit for conditions in Los Angeles
IMO the problem in that type of situation still boils down to capitalism. Contracts given to whoever undersells the most or whoever has a personal relationship with whoever is giving the contact out. Everyone is so goldfish-brained and reactionary re:politics politicos are more worried about a budget tagline than they are excited to provide new infrastructure.
I work for an engineering consulting firm and we constantly have to document why we’re worth the price when there’s no-PPE 2-bit operations who fabricate data telling clients they can do the same work with one guy and a hand drill.
The main project I work on has high (financial) consequences if shit is fucked up so the client doesn’t need a ton of convincing to renew our contracts but that doesn’t stop them from hard negotiating every 5 years so they can pump their quarterly reports or whatever.
All that to say I do believe there are plenty of competent civil engineers out there who can build a bridge and consider the climate they’re building it in. But those people never get hired by our governments.
the words tattooed on my forehead
I'm not gonna dox myself but a long time ago I had to go to school for the field i was working in at the time and I mentioned the name of the engineer who worked at the company I did and my teacher just....froze. i asked if he knew him and he said, he knew of him and refused to elaborate lmao
Not government job or anything
Hey now I’m a designer and I completely agree with you! Capitalist tech sucks shit. The trick is to make things with a focus on accessibility and zero concern for financial return outside of a donation page. That way you can keep your mind clear of temptations of overconsumption and take responsibility for the heat death of the universe the way the Soviets intended.
I love how my car was designed so that i have to take the fucking battery out to change a headlight
