due to the guitarist opening an insta account for our band i now have to maintain thataccount on this absolute hellscape of a platform.

being a long time fedinaut i will ditch it asap. we have both videos and photos to promote a band. i guess pixelfed is kind of a replacement for that? or is masto the real deal? which instances are good for alt music/bands?

Tbh I'd try mastodon. Pixelfed is cool and all but there's not much traffic there.

All Pixelfed content is discoverable and followable up on Mastodon and has the benefit of allowing more attachments per post than Mastodon. So I would think for OPs use case of pushing media-focused content, without really needing the account to consume other peoples' content, Pixelfed is a decent choice.

Video yes. Text-only no, you would need an account on another platform for that.

+1 for Masto over Pixelfed, I have accounts on both and Pixelfed is basically a (very janky) "Mastodon but only image posts but also a whole lot of bugs and terrible UI". The comment feature on Pixelfed is godawful (one of the worst I've ever seen), things like following or muting hashtags sometimes just error out etc. Never had anything similar on Mastodon ever.
