I recall some 50s or 60s sci-fi story where FTL was really easy to discover but for whatever reason humanity just didn't, so a bunch of aliens invaded in wooden steamships.
"The Road Not Taken" by Harry Turtledove.
Definitely pulp slop but I'm pretty sure the author was just being goofy.
