Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

1605 readers
67 users here now

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

74 year community ban for 'homophobia'

here's the exchange that resulted in the ban:

I'm gay, trans, and an anarchist. I thought the post title was misogynistic, objectifying, and not a good example something that should be in a 'queer friendly' space.

Not everyone is okay with sexual degradation humor, misogynistic comments, etc, even if it's about people you disagree with. Pointing that out in this case got me called a homophobic tankie and banned within minutes of making the post.

fwiw I wasn't saying the mod was homophobic based on that comment.

I just thought that it was unnecessarily sexually degrading and misogynistic, thus not a good fit in a 'queer friendly' space

I don’t see how it’s misogynistic. Definitely sexually crude, but there’s nothing gendered about the insult, as compared to words like cunt or dickhead. Both men and women can use cumrags (or be used as one).

Wondering if this was a spin on the word comrade being close to cumrag as well.

my reading is that misogyny isn’t just about whether the target is female, and obviously on a surface read anyone can be a cumrag, or use one.

the use as an insult still relies on demeaning traits that our culture associates with women or femininity. gay men can still have internalized misogyny

Even though "cumrag" can apply across all genders, the primary meaning has been "a thing used to wipe up semen," and "a person treated like a used-up sexual object."

the people getting framed as:

  • passive

  • used

  • disposable

  • interchangeable

  • something sex "happens" to

are women, femmes, and bottoms coded as feminine.

I can feel empowered by describing myself as a slut, cumrag, whatever, and use the term affectionately for others. however using those as insults on anyone I disagree with is still reproducing misogyny

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I don’t necessarily agree but I appreciate it nonetheless

I guess I've led a sheltered life, because the first definition is the only one I thought of initially. But since you've pointed it out I get the issue with it now. I was equating it in my head with something more like "asswipe" initially. But even without the misogyny aspect, the ban was still PTB.

In a similar vein, describing one person submitting or otherwise going along with what another wills as "dickriding" or other similar sexual act is also baked in misogyny and homophobia. The cultural shame levied against gay men, women in general, etc. is why it's supposed to hurt to be called a dickrider for someone, rather than just a sycophant. Both are pejoratives, one relies on that cultural shame.

This is some go go gadget arms level of reaching.

This is some ostrich-head-in-the-sand lack of awareness.

ostrich-head-in-the-sand

Yeah, in the sense that it's a made up myth.
