Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (ツクヨミノミコト, 月読命), or simply Tsukuyomi (ツクヨミ, 月読) or Tsukiyomi (ツキヨミ), is the moon kami in Japanese mythology and the Shinto religion. The name "Tsukuyomi" is a compound of the Old Japanese words tsuku (月; "moon, month", becoming modern Japanese tsuki) and yomi (読み; "reading, counting"). The Nihon Shoki mentions this name spelled as Tsukuyumi (月弓; "moon bow"), but this yumi is likely a variation in pronunciation of yomi. An alternative interpretation is that his name is a combination of tsukiyo (月夜; "moonlit night") and mi (見; "looking, watching"). -no-Mikoto is a common honorific appended to the names of Kami; it may be understood as similar to the English honorific 'the Great'.

In Man'yōshū, Tsukuyomi's name is sometimes rendered as Tsukuyomi Otoko (月讀壮士; "moon-reading man"), implying that he is male

Myth

Tsukuyomi was the second of the "three noble children" (三貴子, Mihashira-no-Uzu-no-Miko) born when Izanagi-no-Mikoto, the kami who created the first land of Onogoroshima, was cleansing himself of his kegare while bathing after escaping the underworld and the clutches of his enraged dead sister, Izanami-no-Mikoto. Tsukuyomi was born when he washed out of Izanagi's right eye. However, in an alternative story, Tsukuyomi was born from a mirror made of white copper in Izanagi's right hand.

Tsukuyomi angered Amaterasu (who in some sources was his wife) when he killed Ukemochi, the megami of food. Amaterasu once sent Tsukuyomi to represent her at a feast presented by Ukemochi. The megami created the food by turning to the ocean and spitting out a fish, then facing a forest and spitting out game, and finally turning to a rice paddy and coughing up a bowl of rice. Tsukuyomi was utterly disgusted by the manner of which the exquisite-looking meal was made in, so he killed her.

Amaterasu learned what happened and she was so angry that she refused to ever look at Tsukuyomi again, forever moving to another part of the sky. This is the reason that day and night are never together. This is according to one of the accounts in the Nihon Shoki. Tsukuyomi does not have such significance in the Kojiki, in which there is a similar tale about Susanoo-no-Mikoto killing a similar food megami named Ōgetsuhime, who is often conflated with Ukemochi.

this The point was not to move the struggle session here (which is why I specifically avoided mentioning the subject of it), but to ask a legitimate question about a pattern of moderator action. I also thought making a separate post was more likely to start the struggle session again than making a comment in the mega.

This keeps happening (decisions and announcements without discussion or consultation - talking about the struggle session and not the megathread comment removal) and it seems less and less likely each time that it's going to be addressed properly. We used to have a user union comm, but iirc that's gone now.

What the hell even happened? Can I get a summary? I don't even have healthy online habits but the frenetic behavior on here is something else. Everything is already locked so I guess I'm just going to slowly write a complete response to everyone and make a mega post about it.

Please, please no one start another struggle session in the replies here, if anyone reading this wants a full view of the situation, go read both threads. I put a summary of how I perceived the situation inside this spoiler. You were in the main thread, so you saw, but I think the main problem was a moderator coming out of nowhere and making a vague post with a very absolute stance (Israel is just a puppet entirely under the control of America, saying otherwise is antisemitism), at the same time as another user in another thread accusing people who say that "Israel" has any influence at all on American politics of being or supporting neo-nazis (you were in that thread too, I assume you saw that).

I think a lot of people (myself included) didn't appreciate a mod just (what they perceived as) deciding that it apparently was now antisemitism to point out that no, it's not as simple as "Israel is just an extension of America" and that there might be more nuance to the situation than that (Israel also has a large collection of lobbying and propaganda groups designed to help maintain the support they get from America and other countries, plus they have a degree of sovereignty and independence as a nuclear-armed state). At best it's just very poor communication on the mod's part, at worst it could become a conflation of criticism of the "Israel" lobby with criticism of a "Jewish lobby" which would just be antisemitism (there is no "Jewish lobby", AIPAC and similar do less than nothing for diaspora Jews).

I want to state outright here, because I'm not trying to start another struggle session, that I don't think "Israel" controls America or anything ridiculous like that. However, there is a feedback loop there, it's not just all "Israel" being the puppet doing America's bidding. It was discussed to death in that thread, and many comrades made excellent points to that effect. Regardless of your opinion on this, I don't think the people disagreeing with the mod in that thread were coming from a perspective of antisemitism or advancing antisemitic arguments (that I saw).

No I really didn't see, would have taken too long. I already kind of expected talking points from Drop Site, Al Jazeera, the usual, so I knew what I wanted to say based on the title of the thread. I made a few points here and there (to people who were clearly operating without any kind of economic framework of imperialism that might explain why the US launches foreign wars beyond "Raytheon line go up", and why the US as the only military power with truly global power projection on the scale to launch these advertures cannot just be stopped by the nations it has impoverished systematically). So I appreciate the summation. Will take me much longer to pick apart the replies I got. The modlog didn't help at all. No desire to engage in a protracted flame war and I am asking in good faith. Nobody shoot me!

SMH @mistermodal@lemmy.ml I can't believe you made me revisit that struggle session to type a summary. 1984

@PowerLurker@hexbear.net the meta comm is !hexbear@hexbear.net. however ur right that posting it in c/hexbear is just likely to start another struggle session. also they need to clean up the sidebar rules they just copy pasted from the matrix channel and confused the hell out of me
