I think a lot of people are just nervous about the crackdown that feels imminent and are hoping he'd be another nazi shooter or something. Although, I don't think it would ultimately change much, as they'd find some other justification to bring the hammer down anyway. The shooter being an almost entirely apolitical G*mer who wrote dumb reddit memes on his bullets is just as American as if he was a nazi.
