And then China threatens to nuke the U.S. if they finish their civil war by invading Puerto Rico. Then China spends decades pretending Puerto Rico is the real U.S. and arms them with billions of dollars of weapons to this day. China also never officially claims that the U.S. is the real United States and sails aircraft carriers off the coast of Florida every month while threatening to destroy the U.S. if they retake Puerto Rico.

I would avoid mentioning China directly in this comparison for libs. They'll hear you talking about "China bad" in a hypothetical and everything else will shut down and that will be their only take away from the conversation.

I would say that the intervening nation should be somewhere like "France" perhaps, a country on the other side of the ocean with no business determining the affairs of the country going through a civil war.

I've used this exact analogy before, and used the UK as the power backing the Confederate vestiges against the US in the hypothetical. It's reasonably close too: the mid 19th century UK would be comparatively moderate beside the Confederates in terms of how they presented themselves, but would have both material reasons for trying to curtail American power while also being just as monstrous under the surface (but on a much bigger scale) as the Confederates were.
