Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Doesn't look good!!

Edit: Saw a closeup, he's 💯 dead. Jugular shot and it gushes like the Cool-Aid man shattered.

Edit 2: Fox is apparently reporting that he's admitted to the hospital, maybe he's a snowball that survived hell?

Edit 3: Mixed reporting on if the shooter has been arrested or not. A video showed an old bald white dude in custody.

Edit 4: Trump just had to be the one to announce it... He's dead. Apparently the old white dude was not the shooter. You can see from the distant video that people did not react to a close shooter, it was at distance.

There will be a right wing backlash to this but whatever backlash occurs will be far smaller than the harm he would've caused in the many decades of his life he would've had.

This has given rise to a thought. The anti-adventurism reasoning I often hear is "think of the many decades of your life you could be contributing to the revolution that you're throwing away". But what everyone misses in that argument is that it should also be weighed against the forces of fascism that are taken off the board as well. Would this shooter have contributed to the left in the next 40 years what the late Charlie would've contributed to the right in the next 40 years? I can't answer that because I do not know who this shooter was, but I can say Charlie would've done a lot.

Bit of a "great man" reading of history though. Some other propagandist chud will step up to take his place. The void will be filled. Charlie Kirk only was as famous as he was because he was satisfying an existing demand.

As competent though? As skilled?

Nigel Farage in the UK has been forged through 40+ years of functioning as a crypto-fascist. Replacing the skillset that makes some of these fascists effective is not as simple as just bringing on the next guy in line.

Materialists do not disbelieve that great men exist, but that the conditions of the time created them and that without their existence other people would have been forged under the same circumstances. But what I am getting at here is that this is not an instantaneous process. You think if Bannon dies tomorrow someone else will just replace him? I do not. The man has been forged through decades and decades filling a niche that someone else will have to fill AND acquire the same experience before meeting the same standard he has.

Look at the competent ghouls like Kissinger vs the incompetent ghouls that currently exist. Do any of them hold a candle to him as a competent monster? No. Not really.

The death of ghouls creates holes that take many decades to fill effectively again.

How many times was the heads of ISIS and Al Qaeda killed? 10? 20? They still took over Syria and are spreading throughout Africa. It’s not easy to replace experience, but there are a lot of other experienced people in the wings.

Kirk wasn’t all that competent or smart anyway. Seemed entirely mid and unremarkable to me.

Not comparable. For a myriad of reasons these people are willing to die for it.

but there are a lot of other experienced people in the wings

But are the competent ones willing to die for it?

Bush wasn't killed, neither was obama

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I just want to confirm you're describing Charlie Kirk as "competent" and "skilled"

[–] OrionsMask@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago

Be real. Turning Point has done some truly evil work.

I don't want people to die. My ideal solution would be disallowing someone to be able to do what Charlie Kirk and his fatal-misinformation-propagating-ilk do in the first place. I see something like this happening as just yet another consequence of our deeply sick society.

But Charlie Kirk undeniably caused many deaths by spreading the kinds of toxic misinformation he did. And it certainly does hurt me deep in my core to watch people like him degrade and damage society without repercussions. Every day I mourn for the humanity that could be, if the Charlie Kirks of the world were not permitted to drag us all down. So hearing that he got blasted... some part of me does feel some degree of... not happiness or satisfaction, but more like... relief. Relief that someone that hurts us all, that makes countless lives measurably worse and ends other lives, was met with proportionate retaliation.

I don't want people to die.

You lost me here every time a fascist dies my mind becomes more unburdened. If this happened every day itd be the best therapy.

[–] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago

I still think he's a bit too unimportant and incompetent, but he's also pretty young, so maybe it's like chopping down a sapling before it becomes a tree.

This is a silly argument because the damage this will do to anyone left of Reagan will be without exaggeration orders of magnitude greater than the functional end of the life of the shooter. This will be a Reichstag fire.

[–] pumpchilienthusiast@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

lol no it won't

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 11 points 3 months ago

Want to bet? Wasn’t this said each time Trump got shot at, and Elias Rodriguez, and Mohammed Soliman, and…

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago

This will be a Reichstag fire.

I really doubt it
