thats german anglicisms for you. before smartphones we called mobile phones handys

[–] LiveFreeDie8@lemmy.world 39 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

What is it called now? They are still teaching to call smartphones a Handy in german classes.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 32 points 4 weeks ago

That's correct. Do pronounce it Händy

[–] Brett@feddit.org 21 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

It depends. Handy is still pretty common and everybody will know what you are talking about. But atleast in my circles we just call them smartphones most of the time now.

Me and all my friends all call them "Handys".

And to people not familar with English loanwords in German: Yes, the correct German pluralization ends with a "ys" and not as it would be correct in English: "ies". The same is true for "Hobbys" and "Babys", not sure if there are more.

Before? They still call them that

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 10 points 4 weeks ago

What are whistles? Blowys?

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 8 points 4 weeks ago

Hahahaha, omg that's awesome

[–] mongo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah handy is funny and is pretty common, but walkies is just what most brits will say for a dog walk and I have no idea where else it is used so would probably suggest it is a bit niche

It’s the pet play part not walkies
