after sugar cane fell away as the dominant cash crop, the plantations of the Coastal South switched to rice. they were probably a significant regional export until mechanization shifted the geography of production away from the fragments of southern wetlands. I thought southern California took over as the #1 producer of rice in the US in the post ww2 era, but that's like 15 year old memory.
anyway, you're probably not more than 45 minutes from the marsh cult shit from True Detective Season 1. say high to the Tuttles.
TD S1 was great, loved it.
